Death Note Episode 33: Ridicule

Sorry for the late. I admit that I had been procrastinating on the reviews during the weekends. No bother there, I need my break for the weekends. For the next coming days, I may not be able to update my blog due to some works at home that made me unable to use the internet. Internet silent for a few days.

So we are down to four more episodes before Death Note wraps up as we counting down to the final episode by next month. Hopefully I get to have the episode in time before I head back to Kelantan to resume my new term. The episode this time did not thrill me enough though but I must say that the music featured is very good. The strings by Yoshihisa Hirano are absolutely superb. Another compliment also goes to Kenji Kawai who did a brilliant job for composing the music for Seirei no Moribito. Kenji Kawai is another familiar name for music composing for anime OSTs alongside with Yoshihisa Hirano and Yoko Kanno. However I did not really like what I hear from Yoko Kanno when she did the music for Darker Than Black. I really suggest that some music emulation from Ocean’s Twelve music to Darker Than Black, which probably suits the jazzy mood of that anime title. Come to think of it, the music for this episode reminds me of Ouran High School Host Club, don’t you think?

Death Note
Light vs. Near

Near decided to got to Japan to continue on his investigation against Kira and asked Lester to come back to New York to accompany him to Tokyo as he never rides a plane alone before. Meanwhile the Japanese police had managed to put Misa into NHN to aid them in their investigation as well. Then Near suddenly called in to inform them about his arrival to Japan. He also acknowledged the Japanese police’s move to observe Takada Kiyomi in their investigation. Near asked them to inform Kiyomi that the SPK has come to Japan to catch Kira. To their surprise, Near also revealed the number of remaining members of SPK as he intended to taunt Kira further - he knows that Light is Kira. Upon hearing this, Light took it as a challenge for him as Kira. With both of them in Japan (I was wrong to think that the Japanese police were still in Los Angeles, my apologies), they might be able to confront each other and resolve the Kira matter once and for all. Take note that this will be Light’s final battle and obstacle that will decide whether he will reign as Kira or ended up being caught by Near. Thinking it over, Light accepted it as a fight against L all over again, this time it’s him against L’s successors - Near and Mello. That’s it, the thrill and excitement for the final conclusion for Death Note begins at this point.

Near revised everything that they have so far. Taking out his toy set, he labelled the first one as L-Kira who he believes as Yagami Light. Then another one, X-Kira who is doing all the killing for Kira and obviously possessed the Shinigami eye. With that, they communicate with each other through Takada Kiyomi. He came to two possible solutions. The first one will be to kill both L-Kira and X-Kira then take the notebook. But of course, he did not see that as the absolute solution as it is not his style and foremost not L’s style to solve a case. Near is propagating his ego as the one who replace L. Downtown, Light was heading to a hotel to meet Kiyomi. Although they are discussing about fan letters, Light was writing something on a memo and passed to Kiyomi to read his intended message while he continue on talking. He was doing this to avoid the investigation members who are listening from installed bugs to know their true intents. Light then mentioned to Kiyomi about the SPK and for her safety, he asked Kiyomi to lure out Kira instead of waiting for his message. However on the memo, he mentioned something else that T (Mikami Teru) has other missions and she will be the one who will replace T to pass judgment (in other terms, to kill with Death Note).

In Mikami’s apartment, Mikami was on his usual (new) routine - writing names on Death Note as he muttered “eliminate”. Mikami has a creepy habit to say “eliminate” each time he writes a name on the notebook. Suddenly Kiyomi called him, instructing him to send a fan letter that includes five pages of the notebook. After receiving it, he will be writing on a fake Death Note. Though Mikami questioned this sudden move, he did not bother about it any further as he blindly accepted the words from Kira whom he worshipped as the absolute God. Again, creepy. Meanwhile at the Japanese police headquarters, they were watching TV as Kiyomi’s own show, “Today’s Miss Takada” was on air. The narrator announced that Kiyomi will have four new bodyguards to serve her, which includes a former CIA agent, Hal Ridner. It was obvious to Light that Hal is an SPK agent and was placed by Near in broad daylight (it is my metaphor for showing Near’s intention of not hiding from Kira).

Near was still thinking about who X-Kira is, knowing the fact that X-Kira may have a relationship with Takada Kiyomi who is a supporter of Kira. As he went into his concentration frenzy, he turned to look at the monitor as Mikami Teru was on display. He was certain that X-Kira is Mikami Teru. Meanwhile Misa was walking with Mogi as she complained that she is not the main attraction for NHN although she is the new highlight for the station. She then stumbled upon Kiyomi and envy took the better of her. She commented of how stupid of her to allow herself to be used by Light in his investigation without realising it. However she just gave a smirk to her and this pissed Misa off. She wanted to confront Misa but was stopped by Hal. Kiyomi asked Hal not to be rough with her, saying that she is a special friend. Meanwhile Near called to the Japanese police and asked for Aizawa. He asked him whether any cameras or bugs were used to record the conversation between Light and Kiyomi. Aizawa affirmed to him only bugs were used. This accounts for the possibility of communication between L-Kira and X-Kira through Kiyomi. SPK decided to focus to Mikami instead. Giovanni who was spying over Mikami reported to Near that Mikami is living a normal without any doubts of him being X-Kira. However Near pushed Giovanni to pay more attention him as Mikami is the likely person to be X-Kira.

At NHN building, Misa complained about her hectic work in the TV station. Then Misa got a dinner invitation by Kiyomi. Misa accepted the invitation. Hal confirmed this to Kiyomi and Kiyomi requested Hal to join her along. At the dinner, Kiyomi apologized to Misa over her late arrival because of her work. She then asked Misa whether she is seeing Light quite often these days. This made Misa angry and she replied that Light is even close to her and told her that she will announce her engagement with Light for the coming New Year Show. Kiyomi asked if Light knows about it and Misa claimed he knew about it because one cannot be engaged with only a person’s consent. Kiyomi doubted their engagement plans and Misa was angry for her remarks. She also accused her to use Kira to kill her. Kiyomi denied this as Kira is the one who do the judgment and that she is not capable of killing. Misa admitted to support Kira but she wished that Kira will be caught by Light and Kiyomi will also be executed to death. Hearing this made Kiyomi realised that Misa was not aware that Light is Kira. She recalled her conversation with Light in the hotel room previously about their stand to rule the world together. Kiyomi strikes with confidence of this and decided to make a leave, saying that she was offended by Misa’s words. Kiyomi also commented that they can only have a dinner together when Misa is a little older. Misa blasted back, saying that she is older and to leave the table early is bad manner. Now saying that she is older is kind of wrong if this is girl talk. Misa gotten drunk soon after and proclaimed to Misa that she has won. Hal reported the happenings to Near. Near came to a conclusion that Light had made Misa and Kiyomi in a love triangle and they love him with their lives. During the dinner is when the background music really ignited the mood. Honestly I like the new tunes as it is portrayed in the cat fight of Misa and Kiyomi. I love Death Note even more now.

Giovanni was still on the tail with Mikami inside a train. Nearby a lady was harassed by a man. Giovanni was watching on Mikami as he took out his mobile phone. Then he took out a notebook. Giovanni informed Near about it immediately. Mikami wrote something on the notebook and went out as the train stopped. Giovanni was about to follow Mikami when the man suddenly collapsed and died.

From how the story had developed so far, the story frame is complete and now it is time to unravel everything. Next episode will be excited and sadly, Mikami will die. This short-lived character is a relief to me, I like Mikami. Too bad, he was cut off from the show. Then things are to imminent and clear. No spoilers intended here. Everyone knows Light or Kira will be defeated - in ways you cannot possibly imagine. I feel sad each time I think of it. That bastard Near. Let L live and Near should be the one who dies. I am being emotional here.
