Due to some matters in the household, I got myself occupied with it and this rendered me a late review for this final episode review of Death Note. I know that this is the most anticipated episode in this series since L’s death. My failure to review it as sooner possible was regretted. Not only this review was made late, even the review for Devil May Cry had to be delayed as well. So without further ado, I present you the review of the finale of Death Note.

Surprise! They’re not dead yet.
Continuing from the previous episode, Light had declared his victory over Near. Much to his surprise, things did not turned out as what he had planned. One minute passed on and no one died. Mikami and Light were in disbelief - even Matsuda and Ide were surprised by it. Near quickly ordered Lester and Giovanni to apprehend Mikami. They arrested Mikami and took away the notebook held by Mikami. Near checked all the names written on the notebook. The only name that was not written was Yagami Light. This added with Mikami referring to Light as “God” and his obedience to his instructions. Near then confirmed it that Light is Kira. In a desperate attempt, Light claimed the whole plan as Near’s trap to frame him, considering that it is strange that no one died after all the names were written on the notebook. If you call this pathetic, then I don’t know how to refer to coming chain of events. Besides this is also the first time Light had totally lost his cool and showed a rare side of himself - insecurity. For the first time, Light felt defeated and was desperate to find a way out from this delicate matter. Near stressed on what he had said earlier that the notebook was modified. Again Light was being desperate and called out the plan as a trap for him and he even denied knowing Mikami. Of course Mikami felt rejected by this. However Aizawa went to Light and asked him to give up. It was very obvious that Near’s plan had worked out perfectly, leaving Light defeated. And also it was proven that Light is Kira. Light himself had said before the “40th second” that “he had won” as though that he had won the fight against Near as Kira. Matsuda was the one who was heavily affected as he was in disbelief that Light is Kira. Matsuda was always convinced that Light was innocent, not until now.

“And you have the right to remain silent.”
Lester was about to handcuff Light but Light fought back in defiance. He began to run like a frightened rat - this too is pathetic but not the most pathetic state yet. Near affirmed to Light of his defeat and explained of his real plan to him. Near revealed that he did everything exactly as what Light had predicted. However Near was serious about modifying the real notebook. He replaced the real notebook with a fake duplicate and shown the real notebook to all of them, which was taken out from his shirt. I hope Near does not have bad body odour. He compared the two notebooks as an exact match as done by Giovanni over one night. To prove that he has the real notebook, Near said that he was able to see the shinigami Ryuk. Light believed him as Near was speaking to Ryuk while the others were unable to see him. After a brief introduction, Near asked Ryuk if it was possible to kill someone from a torn piece of the notebook. Saying that it was possible, Near wondered how many people were killed by Light in by that method and how Light was able to fool them so many times. In his final justification, Near concluded that Light is Kira. Light was still in shock of what had happened and wondered if Mikami had betrayed him. As though Near could read his mind, Near denied that allegation and gave credits to Mello who leads to the success of his plans. Near shown him the real notebook and revealed that Takada’s name was written on it. Light was the one who killed Takada actually but the details on the notebook was set on a minute later than what Light had written. This was Mikami’s error that brings to Light’s ultimate defeat. Mikami only assumed that Light was in no position to move freely and with Takada posing potential risk damage, Mikami could only thought that he was the only one to handle the matter. Light was furious of him because he was told not to do anything unnecessary until this day. Too bad, Light. Lady Luck is not smiling at you now.

Near is checking the attendance. Light is absent.

Ryuk might not want this notebook back.

Which one is the real one?
During the kidnapping of Takada, Mikami went out to the bank. Giovanni who had been investigated him for a long while, noticed this anomaly because Mikami is a person who is strict to his routine and one of his routine was to go to the bank every 25th of each month. During that kidnapping, Mikami decided to go to the bank on that day although it was not the 25th yet. Behaving out of his normal routine caused suspicion and Giovanni checked it out. That day, Mikami was also acted more suspiciously and more carefully as he made his way to the deposit boxes inside the bank. Giovanni later checked out the deposit box and found the real notebook inside with Takada’s name written on it. Light was unaware of Mikami acting on his own and this also made Near realised of the fake notebook. In order to create this scenario, Mello was the one who paid the price. Near knew that he alone could not surpass L but by combining with Mello, they were able to defeat Kira whom L himself was not able to tackle. Light was taunted by Near but he was speechless. Then he broke into an insane laughter. Finally he confessed being Kira. He began to preach his self-righteousness as Kira for justice and hope for mankind. He asked if it is alright to kill him straight away. When Light first received the Death Note, he had the urge to change the world in a way he intended by get rid of evil from the world - passing judgements. He believe that he is the only man for the job, chosen to do the job of creating a new world. Near denied him and called Light as a mass murderer who obtained the power to kill from a shinigami. He also labeled the notebook as a killing weapon.

Takada’s name written on top of the page.

Mikami forgot to lock up the notebook inside the deposit box.

It takes three to do the job.

“Hahaha! I am Kira.”
Comes a long silence as Light began to think of another plan. Light began to speak out, asking Near if the notebook he hold and the one with Aizawa are the real Death Note. Near considered this as an attempt to bluff them. Ought to prove the authenticity of the notebooks, Light suggested to write his name or Mikami’s on the notebooks. While at it, Light began to pulled the crown of his wristwatch three times - a trick to open a hidden compartment inside his watch that holds the hidden piece of the notebook. This was Light’s final secret weapon. Unfortunately for Light, his actions did went unnoticed. Matsuda was the fast one to respond to this and shot at Light’s hand. Light went berserk for Matsuda’s doing. Matsuda started to talk about Light’s father who had died in believing his son is innocent. However Light gotten cocky to day that people like his father are a bunch of losers. Yet Light still took advantage of this situation to continue on writing Near’s name on that piece of the notebook with his blood. Aiwaza noticed this and sounded his warning. Matsuda released more shots at Light and Light fell to the ground. Matsuda was still enraged with Souchirou’s needless sacrifice and threatened to kill Light. Fortunately Matsuda was still conscious to miss that shot by inches from Light’s head. Light was terrified while Matsuda was restrained by the rest of the Japanese investigation team. Now this is when Light has gotten really, really pathetic.

Light’s secret weapon.

Light spilled some ketchup on his hands.

Big girls boys don’t cry.

“Nate… R…”

Not so fast because Matsuda is on shooting spree.

This is just pathetic. Light looked as though he had pee in his pants.
Mikami can only watched as Light ordered him to write their names. Light begged to Misa and Takada to help him and he was helpless to do anything. In that dire moment for Light, Mikami took matters on his own. He thrusted a sharp object to his heart and blood began to pump out at a fast rate. Nothing can be done to save him. Light made a despair attempt to escape. The Japanese team wanted to chase Light but was stopped by Near, saying that Light no longer have any hidden pieces of the notebook. Adding the wounds sustained by Light, his movement will eventually stops. Aizawa however not fazed by Near’s display of dominance, saying that he won’t be obeying to his instructions. Meanwhile Light was running aimlessly with his past began to cross path with him. After that montage, Ryuk began to speak that Light has been defeated. He recalled of the deal he had made with Light earlier that the one who will be writing his name in the end will be Ryuk himself. Not knowing when Light will died if he ended up in prison and Ryuk was not planning on waiting as well, Ryuk began to write a name on his notebook - Yagami Light. Ryuk recalled of the past that they have shared together but what was done is done. Later Misa was seen on the train and ended up on top of a building. Likely speculation? Attempting suicide. Back to Light’s final moment, he began to see L’s ghost appearing before him and shutting his eyes, he breathed his last. The end.

“Oh no! I’m ugly!”

Mikami is rather be dead than to look ugly.

Prison break? Not quite there yet.

Light’s finest hour - looking like a bishounen before dying.

A visitation from his past.
What more can I say about the ending? Indeed it was a pathetic death to Light but it had also ended in a melancholic kind of way. Especially when Light began to see his past before his eyes - classical depiction of a person’s dying moments. It was made more meaningful when Ryuk himself had appreciated the time he had spent with Light. Rather that betraying Light, Ryuk made the right thing in the end by ending Light’s life with his own Death Note. I’m not saying Light died in honour but rather that this had sealed the deal between Ryuk and Light, a solid proof of their relationship. Then there’s also Misa supposedly committed suicide. This unlikely Romeo and Juliet story is different compared to the manga where the supporters of Kira were seen going to the top of a mountain, instead of having Misa going on top of a building.

Ryuk came to say goodbye.

The last name - Yagami Light.

He knew that his time is up.

Rest in peace, Yagami Light.
Finally the death of Light can be simply explained as karma. Initially the story is about the battle between Light and L. With L being the first one defeated, Light remained triumphant - for a brief period. Then comes the succeeding generation of L. This had come unexpected by Light but he was unshaken by this. Instead he stood up to fight against them. Mello was the one sacrificed to ensure a victory against Kira and this leave Near as the remaining contender. Light has lost at this point. So when it comes to comparing the feud of L and Light to the feud Near (plus Mello) and Light, the first arc was definitely better. The second arc which leads towards the ending only serves as to complete the final chapters of the battle where both opponent will finally meet their deaths. Bear in mind that this is a battle between L and Light. Near and Mello were out of this equation. The second arc provided better insights into Light ultimate defeat - the pathetic end that everyone had expected. Not quite well expected though. The truth is the ending could have been better. But I justified that the writers were being fair and decided to make Light’s death a little less pathetic compared to the original manga version of the ending. I like the fact that the writers managed to infuse solidarity and melancholy towards the ending. Too bad that Mikami was portrayed as insane and as ugly. Probably to the aggressive facial expression of madness. Even Light had similar expressions except for the ending part. To the least, he really looked like a bishounen in the end. A beautiful death.

me parace que estan chidas las imagenes son una mamada pero esta bien. Aun no termino la serie es por eso que estoy tan intrigado, ya que en donde me quedo es cuando rem mata a L, la verdad es que no pense que seria tan facil
i appreciate for your comment but i would prefer it to be in english. i can’t seem to understand your words. i tried on babelfish but it did little to help. but i do know that you have not finish this anime yet. do please reply back to this comment in english.
On the other hand, his manga death is really pathetic.
In the manga Light squirms on the ground in front of the team members and begs for Ryuk to write the names of the investigation team. Ryuk refuses and writes Light’s name.
i dont understand in the wikipidea it say Misa got to live up to 26 wasn’t she lights age when he died?????
and wat happend to Near,Aizowa,or most importantMatsuda?????????
In the final episode, it is suggested that Misa commits suicide by jumping off a building. But in the manga, she joins many other Kira followers for a mass suicide. As for Near, he is all well and continues his works as the new L for the police force. This was shown in the final extra chapter of Death Note in the manga. As for Aizawa and Matsuda, nothing clear is known about what happens to them but I’m guess life goes on for them both.
