Code Geass R2 episode 05

I know I am late. Don’t remind me. Apparently I’m much busier during holiday compared to when I was at campus. Sigh!

Members of The Order of the Black Knights are celebrating their victory against the Britannia army earlier, while Lelouch was about the Knightmare Vincent who saved him. However Lelouch refuses to reveal anything to Kallen and C.C. about the pilot, saying that it is alright if he keeps certain matters as secret from them. Later on, Lelouch joined the members of the Black Knights as Zero. Instead he was confronted by some of the members about him abandoning them at the eleventh hour during the Black Rebellion. Many were not happy with Zero’s explanation but after Toudou and Ougi come to Zero’s defense and prompt that Zero is necessary for their victory, the Black Knights let out a roaring cheer for Zero. More after the jump.

The next morning, Lelouch was in for a surprise when Suzaku returns to Ashford Academy. Even the whole class was buzzed by having the Knight of Seven as their classmate. Both Lelouch and Suzaku shares the same fact about which memory of his that had been altered; first is about Nunnally, second is about him being Zero and lastly that he is a Britannian prince. So that means, the fact remains that they still remain friends (as far as the altered memory is concerned). Facing each other, they both exchanged their “friendly” greetings and the rest of the class – including Milley – joined them. All Lelouch is hoping for is that Rollo won’t mess around. The old friends gathered for a chat, including Rollo in the picture though the separation between him with the rest is evident. Then they begin to play guessing game with Suzaku about who Zero really is but Suzaku refuses to as it is confidential. Arthur comes in, biting Suzaku’s hand as usual. Later on, Rollo returned to the command centre to report back to Villetta with Suzaku there to supervise them. Given the sufficient evidence, Villetta comes to a conclusion that Lelouch has not yet regained his memory. However Suzaku needs more probing to firmly prove that Lelouch has not returned as Zero yet. Rollo is still in ambivalence whether to trust Lelouch or not but Lelouch assures Rollo that he should loosen up himself around him as they both are brothers. Meanwhile Area 11 Government building is under attack by an unknown unit which later identified as Knightmare Tristan with its pilot Zino Weinberg, the Knight of Three. Zino is doing so to test out the defensive line of the place in which he later proved to be inferior. Suzaku comes in to stop Zino from doing further damage, then later, Anya Earlstriem arrives with her Knightmare Mordred. With him and two more Knights of Round by his side, Suzaku believes he have enough strength to go against Lelouch.

The welcome party for Suzaku at Ashford Academy kicks off with an unsuspecting fellow walking around. While he and Lelouch are peeling potatoes, Rollo is still undecided about his thoughts and wanted to strike on Lelouch instead but Lelouch held his hands to show him how to peel the potatoes. Unknowingly, Lelouch was putting up an act for Suzaku who was by the door, watching over them before moving away. It was then, Rollo comes clean to Lelouch and reveal the weakness of his Geass – and that was not revealed, unfortunately. At the same time, Zino and Anya join in the school’s festivity. Lelouch is at the rooftop as he carries out his commands as Zero when he spotted C.C. among the festival crowd. Obviously C.C. is there for the pizza. Lelouch quickly grabbed C.C. away from the school, fearing for her safety. Meanwhile Villetta puts up a show as a swimsuit model for the festival. Suzaku and Milley are elsewhere in the school at the MR-1 Knightmare Frame, talking about Kallen and Nina. When it comes to Earl Lloyd however, Milley is remorseful for having to repeat another year in school and delaying her marriage with Lloyd. With speaking up on Lloyd’s behalf, Arthur jumps up to him and took away the feather pen he is holding which belongs to Euphemia. Suzaku gives chase and Milley follows begins, dropping the clipboard bearing the action plan for their grand pizza finale (it must always be a giant pizza when it comes to school festival, isn’t it?). Zino who is with Anya, picks up the clipboard moments later. At the tomato container, C.C. told Lelouch that V.V. is the one who has given Geass to the Emperor and that Suzaku has yet to be contracted by the Geass. Suddenly Shirley calls out for Lelouch and he immediately pushs C.C. into the tomato container to hide her away and closes it. Just when Shirley thought she is alone with Lelouch, an animal costume bites Lelouch in. It turns out that Kallen is the person behind the costume. She explains herself that she is there to take C.C. away but Shirley interrupted and tried to remove the costume’s head. Kallen defends herself not reveal herself to Shirley.

More trouble arises when Suzaku and Milley come to the scene as they are frantically searching for Arthur. As if things are not bad enough for Lelouch, Zino arrives with the MR-1 Knightmare and took the tomato container away with C.C. inside. So the race begins and it is obvious who is leading and who lags behind. With Arthur having the Knightmare at his tail, Suzaku jumps in right in time to save him from being overrun by the Knightmare. Also desperate is Lelouch who tries not to let C.C. being revealed to everyone. So he commanded a student on duty to activate the System Pattern Rouge to let out all the coloured gas and bubbles to screen off C.C. from everyone. This also avoided Kallen being identified by Villetta as they both stumbled upon each other. After the incident, Lelouch debriefs Kallen and C.C. and Kallen told about Villetta who was seen together with Ougi during last year’s school festival, making Lelouch to think that there other secrets that are kept hidden from him as well. So C.C. tells Lelouch her plan against Villetta. Later on, Rollo pointed his gun at Villetta and Lelouch walks in to threaten about her relationship with Ougi that may compromise her position as a Baron in the Britannia ranks. So he persuaded her to join his side. After calling Xingke who took Kallen and C.C. back from the school, Suzaku comes up to him and reveals his intention to become the Knight of One – the most powerful in the empire. He intends to use the privilege as the Knight of One to choose Area 11 as his area of administration and that Japan no longer needs Zero once he have reached that objective. So Suzaku contacts the soon-to-be Governor General of Area 11 to talk to Lelouch about the matter. Lelouch is not prepared for what awaits him as he receives the call. Turning his back to Suzaku, Lelouch begins talking to the person on the other side and the Governor General turns out to be Nunnally. And oh, Lelouch never looks so surprised than this.

Thoughts: The writers got me this time. I had never expected that Nunnally will be serving the Empire as the Governor General. I don’t know if this is Suzaku’s idea or the Emperor’s but this plan had certainly puts Lelouch in a huge dilemma. Okay, in the beginning, I thought that this would be a fanservice episode – yeah, it’s the school festival that calls in for that cause with Villetta-sensei in swimsuit and CLAMP working on C.C. as a Chobit. Either way, the only content I can see in this episode is the introduction of Zino and Anya into the story. And that Arthur is back with his usual mischief. Another point taken in this episode is that Rollo now entirely trusts Lelouch as he was willing enough to reveal the weakness of his Geass. That’s one done deal for Lelouch. And obviously Villetta is the next person that Lelouch aims to get and I suppose that Villetta had to give in to Lelouch. It is also interesting enough that Lelouch reveals himself to Villetta, instead of as Zero. The latter would be a better idea but I believe that would make little difference at the end of the day. It is all depends on how Villetta would prioritize herself. However I can see that Villetta would eventually fight for the Black Knights, given her romantic feelings for Ougi which would influence her stand in the matter. So now, that leave the biggest headache in the story – Suzaku. Well, obviously Lelouch can bring Suzaku to his side any longer, especially that it was Lelouch that killed Euphemia, Suzaku’s beloved one. I must say, Lelouch is one calculative fellow. First, he turned his back to Suzaku and no letting him to see his immediate reaction for Suzaku to see, which what Suzaku is waiting for. Second, he did not respond immediately, giving his reasonable doubt that he does not recognize Nunnally though in actuality, he is. At least, this gives some opportunity for Lelouch to think of something not to compromise himself to Suzaku. But it will definitely irks him, should he pretends not to know Nunnally. Speaking of Nunnally, given that she still remembers Lelouch, it is suggestive that her memory has yet to be altered though a no-change won’t necessary the case for Nunnally. One thing for sure, Lelouch is hating Suzaku even more.

Next episode: Another battle awaits for the Black Knights with Guilford back in action after his defeat, possibly that he will return with a Vincent. And could it be the end for Kallen? I doubt so though.
