Durarara has begun! Being THE most anticipated anime of the year, it had high expectations. Not anymore. Baka Test and Sora no Woto have now captured the hearts of millions while DRRR! only brought a bitter disappointment (not a total one but still a disappointment. Compared to Baka to Test to Shokanjuu, it was rather uneventful. But B2T2S 1st ep did something quite rare in 13+ episode anime: It started the plot right off the bat without rushing too early. Ep review after the picture of an idiot freaking out:
Now, now don’t be commenting something like how the F@#% is B2T2S is better than DRRR!?!?! Rather comment on how similar DRRR’s OP is to Baccano’s and how even the characters seem similar. Analogous to Sora no Woto: K-ON? Yes.
Summary
Mikado Ryugamine comes to Ikebekuro for school due to encouragement from his childhood friend, Masaomi Kida, and his own interests. He hasn’t gone to any field trips before, and is basically a country kid coming to the city. As Masaomi gives a tour around, he talks about who to look out for. As they walk around, they bump into a cute girl who is apparently an androphobe or a psychotic. After watching her running away while yelling NOO! , they continue talking. In between segments, the show trackbacks to a chat online done before Mikado moved. There they talked about a mass suicide. The scene cuts into a girl walking around and meeting this well-dressed goon with glasses. She agrees to walk into an empty street with a guy. (*facepalms* Stupid much?) The well-dressed goon opens up the truck of a van. A guy with his hands behind his back (*headesk*) greets her then knocks her out with anesthesia. We didn’t see this coming at all! =_=; We go back to Mikado and watch him meet a Russian African-American, an otaku foursome, and the psychotic. While that’s going on, Kida warns him about a guy who randomly throws large objects, a gang called “dollars” and a motorcycle grim reaper aka Ms. Nekomimi-Grim Reaper. The scene cuts back to Ms. Nekomimi-san kicking the goons’ asses and saving the girl. THE END

Thoughts
I say the 1st ep would be a B+ otherwise lower. The episode bored me since I seen most of the fight scene in the preview. The 1st ep was basically summarized in the novel synopsis. That’s wai I’m giving it a B+ not a B-. It didn’t particularly get my attention. Sora no Woto was probably the best 1st ep I have ever seen. To get an a you have to get at least to Sora no Woto’s epic level. I haven’t lost hope but I am disappointed. I wonder what next ep will bring…
Badass Celty is Badass

This is purely an introductory episode. I cannot judge it right now. But one thing for certain, the OP catches my attention very effectively. I’ll just have to wait and see
@canne
I found it too much like Baccano’s OP. The song is okay but reusing that idea bored me even further since the novel synopsis basically spoiled the 1st ep. We’ll just have to see how it goes as u said but first impressions are VERY important.
I don’t know, I found both of them quite disappointing. But Durarara actually seemed to be trying to be a bit original, even given it’s similarities to Baccano. B2T2S was nothing but completely generic. When a battle show’s battles are that boring and predictable, and it’s characters or humor don’t pick up the slack, then I’d rather watch idiots being killed by a stupid headless biker. Maybe a couple more episodes will change my mind, but I highly doubt it.
Is it Durarara or Dullalala? I’m seeing some subbers use both.
@ Meimi: I think it’s Durarara, since it’s supposed to emulate the sound a motorcycle makes. You know, ‘Drrrr!’ or something like that. I mean, try saying Durarara really fast. Least that’s what I figure.
I checked it out. Seems watchable
I agree with you that Sora No Woto gave an Epic Intro episode…
And like Canne said, I loved the OP… the song rocks!
