Given that its 3 episodes already, this will just be an “Impressions” post as opposed to a First Impressions post.
In a nutshell i’ve been pretty impressed with X-Men so far, it’s officially way better than both Iron-Man & Wolverine put together.
What sets X-Men apart from the previous two is not the animation quality as Iron-Man was of a decent quality too but that the story although it is original is still based on X-Men comics canon, yes as lame as it sounds, the U-Men are official X-Men canon (created by one of my favorite writers – Grant Morrison no less) as well Hisako Ichiki, the japanese mutant who they must rescue.
A big plus for the series is that they finally seem to have portrayed Wolverine correctly for once. He is shorter, hairier, more barbaric and certainly a lot less emo than in his own series. The emo quota is more than filled by Cyclops exploits in the 1st two episodes as he struggles to deal with the death of Jean Grey. I’m okay with this as Scott was always a bit of pussy.
The show isn’t perfect however as I struggle each episode to deal with the fact that Beast looks more like he’s supposed to be in the new Thundercats reboot rather than a hardcore X-Men member and for some reason Storm cannot use her powers for longer than Scott can hold an erection. But these are minor complaints that only a fanboy like me would make and it looks like we’ll have quite a few nice cameo’s later in the series such as we saw in episode 3 and that awesome teaser image which runs in the credits.
Story wise I can’t complain yet, these first 3 episodes have been rather formulaic, introducing the team as well as the bad guys. The premise is clear but it still gives off the impression that something bigger is to come, especially given the random cuts the show repeatedly makes to Professor X. As far as I can tell, they haven’t tried to over japanify the show as they did with Wolverine & Iron-Man, Japan is just the setting and the show has so far followed a rather standard western formula.
