Darker Than BLACK (Episode 26 DVD Special)

Darker Than BLACK released a DVD special episode last week (or a couple weeks ago, can’t remember exactly when), very much to the relief of many fans of this anime. What fans would love to see is a closure to the story and it is well within expectation when BONES released the OVA, hopefully to hint many unanswered questions. More after the jump.

Heroes x Keiyakusha

Update: The girl character taken by Kristin Bell is named Elle. Sure enough, we’ll be seeing more of her in the coming episodes.

It has been almost a month since Darker Than Black was over. Most of the people agree that the ending is rather abrupt and viewers wanted more. I hope the writers listen to our plea. Somehow fate has its own twist, possibly answering to our far-cry intentions. When I said far, it’s thousands of miles far and it goes all the way to Hollywood.

Heroes x Keiyakusha
Hei’s Hollywood debut… finally.

Heroes x Keiyakusha
Kristin Bell

Last night, I was watching Heroes episode 5 (my weekly dose of TV) and for the record, I am a fan of Heroes. Just a bit unhappy of the ending of season 1 but the call was good. Season 2 kicks off with a big bang. Anyway a new character was introduced in this episode. This cute blonde girl (Kristin Bell from Veronica Mars) who works for The Company was in Ireland to search for the missing Peter Petrelli.

Heroes x Keiyakusha
Even Hei is confused.

Now what does she got to do with Darker Than Black? Or even Hei altogether? If you watched that episode, you’ll know. As we know in Heroes, there people who has special powers and this girl is one of them. By now it is all too clear. In Darker Than Black, we know Hei has the ability to manipulate electricity for his contract. In Heroes, there is no such thing as contract and there won’t be a need for remuneration. Also this girl can use electricity too!

Heroes x Keiyakusha
Hei got electric powers.

Heroes x Keiyakusha
She got it too.

Likely she has the upper hand in terms of power, making Hei looks like a sore loser. No offence, Hei but this girl is good. She can even shoot electric beams! More like a Tesla coil.

Heroes x Keiyakusha
Weapon of Mass Destruction!

Now I wonder if Hei migrated to the United States, married a gaijin there and have a family. She might be Hei’s daughter, out in the hunt for all the Contractors Heroes people with special abilities on earth. This kind of story might spark some interest here (pun not intended).

Darker Than Black (Episode 25/Finale)

Nothing really good for Fall 2007 anime season, other than Shakugan no Shana II. But who am I kidding with? I have not watched the first season, there is no way I will be watching the second one. But I will have a try on the series first. Regarding anime reviewing plans, I’ll get to that later.

This is it everyone, the final episode of Darker Than Black. I only have one thing to say about this. This is not the ending that we all have wanted (or expected for that matter). The only reasoning for this kind of ending is that this won’t be the last of Darker Than Black. An OVA (or hopefully a second season) would make a big break, definitely. By now, we know that Hei is not entirely Contractor (still human) and that Bai’s power is showed only a fraction inside Hei. Yes, Bai is that strong.

After Amber thanked Yin for bringing Hei to her, she explained that she don’t have much time left. Reasonable considering that she had grew (or rather shrink) younger. Outside the Gate, Saitou and Kouno are trying to infiltrate the Gate but to their relief, Matsumoto came with a car to force their way in. Meanwhile inside the PANDORA facility, preparations were made to activate the Saturn ring. Back to Hei, Amber remarked about how sad the city within the Gate looks like. She explained that other than herself to know about the Syndicate and their motives, Bai was also involved and at that time, Hei did not have a slightest idea about it since Bai never intend to have Hei involved into the matter. It seems that EPR existed since back then. She also said that Hei is still human as he have troubles deciding being a human or a Contractor. Hold on. Hei is not fully a Contractor yet? I know he used to be human 5 years ago but have not yet a Contractor until now is a shocking fact for me. From this point onwards, everything Amber talking about are just gibberish.

Darker Than Black
“The fight between humans and Contractors is on!”

Darker Than Black (Episode 24)

I am so hyped about going back this Thursday. There is a great likelihood that I’ll making a brief stop to KL before going back home.

Deaths, deaths and more deaths. This is expected as the intensity of the finale and the nature of the story propage each other. If there is any high impacting loss, that would be Huang and Mao. I felt for Huang’s loss but not quite the same for Mao. The way he “died” was not exactly anyone’s imagination. By this episode, it is clear that this final battle (hopefully) is between mankind and Contractors. Well Contractors are humans to begin with, only having special powers as an added bonus. As PANDORA plots to exterminate them for good, it is rational for them to rise and fight against PANDORA. Again, more is revealed about the Syndicate. We now know that it is well affiliated with various organisations worldwide. I just hope it is not DHL or NHK (pun meant for NHK ni Youkoso) for that matter. As I mentioned earlier, this episode is intense. So many details are covered at once in this episode, naturally I responded to type a longer post for this one. Please bear with me. Should this episode got a problem, that would be Amber at the closing scene.

Darker Than Black
This is the final goodbye…

Huang planned to go for fishing while driving Hei and the rest, then dropped them off somewhere before exiting the tunnel. As Huang distracted the chasing PANDORA team, he was already wounded by a gunshot earlier (from the previous episode). Meanwhile Misaki showed up at the PANDORA centre to meet with Professor Schroeder. After passing through tight security, she was surprised to see Eric with Schoeder upon meeting the latter in his office. Eric explained the disappearance incident of the Heaven’s Gate in South America, rendering it inaccessible by any humane form. The cause was obviously by BK201 but by then, the Messier code BK201 was actually assigned to a girl instead of Hei that we know now. Eric explained further that the EPR planned the same for Hell’s Gate in Tokyo and it is predicted that the whole Japan may be wiped off the map. To prevent this, the PANDORA intended retaliation by destroying the Hell’s Gate using the Saturn system. Saitou received a call from Matsumoto to head to PANDORA where Misaki is, bringing Kouno with him.

Darker Than Black (Episode 23)

Much was revealed of the past regarding Hei and Amber but those are not enough. This probably because the past was seen from Hei’s perspective and apparently he have little recollection about the Heaven’s Gate disappearance and also about his sister Bai. I like the slow progress of the story in this episode while waiting for the brewing climax of the coming finale. It seems that everyone is able to lead a normal life despite the ongoing conflict between the not-so-mysterious Syndicate and the Contractors (under the name of EPR). Somehow it felt like the tension is killing the patience in me. Although Gai and Kiko remained to be the unnecessary element of the story (yet they make such great filler), the least is that Gai’s script in this episode is more sensible and match perfectly to the unnoticed building confrontation. Another confusing thing is that Hei was seen to attempt to strangle Bai whom he love the most. Speaking of which, it is also surprising to know that Hei was not a Contractor five years ago and yet he was skillful to kill Contractors back then. Is it possible that he gotten his power from his sister whose current wellbeing is unknown? The writers are playing sneaky as ever even towards the end of the story. Overall this episode is already the beginning of the end.

Darker Than Black
Hei’s sister, Bai

It back to Hei’s past when Hei battled a Contractor in South America and surprisingly he did not have any Contractor powers back then. Even so, he managed to kill that Contractor and eventually caught up with his sister Bai who was seen standing in the middle of a pool of water filled with dead bodies. So Bai is a Contractor - a scary strong one. Fast forward to the present days, Kurosawa Gai (I really hope this will be the last of him) was requested for an assignment from a parent to search for stories regarding the old stars (before the fake ones came). In short, she wants Gai to do her son’s homework. This all came to light as the rumour goes by saying that tonight is when the real stars would appear back temporarily. With a hefty payment, the job was accepted (by Kiko, of course). Meanwhile Hourai queried Misaki about her relationship with November. Misaki said it was strictly professional. Hourai suspected November is a member of the EPR but restrained Misaki to investigate further into details as they have no authority to do so despite the suspicious involvement of PANDORA. Huang told of the story about Hei when a dispute went on within the Heaven’s Gate and Contractors were sent out as weapons. Back then, Hei worked together with Amber and he was not a Contractor. That time, the reputable Contractor was Hei’s sister Bai. Indeed she is a scary one.

Darker Than Black (Episode 22)

Despite the update, I am still not able to catch up with my ongoing assignments, pushing my reviews further back to the back of the calendar. I will make another update as soon as I’m done with one assignment, as I plan to do reviews on those intervals. God! Take away this burden!

No denying that this is the best episode so far, if not the most high-impact episode in the series. The whole mystery about the Syndicate is unraveled in this episode. By now, we know who are involved with the Syndicate and their motives. One eerie revelation is the affiliation of PANDORA with the Syndicate. Why? The hint is Eric and Sergei (from episode 11 and 12). What’s more is that Decade (November’s boss) is also a member of the Syndicate. However the revealing truth is the Syndicate’s intention to eradicate all Contractors. Since the most mysteries were solved in this episode, including the answer for the disappearance of Heaven’s Gate in South America, what is left is the key events in Hei’s past. I just want to know how Amber was involved with Hei and who Bai really is. Also the episode is in grief with its own as November is finally done with his final mission to investigate the Syndicate. As consequence, he is now dead. November had been my favourite character in the series and now he is dead. Such untimely death, so soon.

Darker Than Black
Little kitty is in big trouble.

Mao woke up in an unknown room with the thought that Contractors are able to think rationally and adjust themselves well in any situation. In the room, he spotted November stark naked. Then Amber, Wei and Brita entered the room. So Mao tried to walk out from the room, pretending as though nothing is going on but Amber stopped him as she asked him where is he going. Running out of options, the best plan he could come up with is to meow. Meaning that he will remain with the enemy. Meanwhile Misaki is recovering from her arrest by PANDORA and her colleagues criticized PANDORA’s rough action to intervene into the matter. Then she was called up by Hourai. Inside his office, Misaki met with April, July and Decade, the director of MI6 of Far East Division. The meeting was to inquire about November’s whereabouts. Decade asked Misaki that question but Misaki was clueless about November’s location as well. Even April failed to make contact with November. Decade was worried if November is changing side with the enemy.
