12 Days of Anime #5: How ‘Slice of Life’ Made a Home in My Heart

I have to be honest: When I first started watching anime, I was drawn to the shows that were fantastical, that involved magic, different dimensions, futuristic worlds, or mecha. Whether it was the ability to manipulate natural elements, mold chakra, recite spells, perform superhuman feats, or interact with and drive a really cool piece of machinery, it was these kinds of shows that interested me. And only these shows.

Hanasaku Iroha Episode Twenty-Six: The End

I know Hanasaku has been dropped and picked up and dropped and picked up and dropped by a few members of Bokutachi during its 26 episode run, and as the person who was originally responsible for reviewing it, I felt the need to at least review the last episode.

Since watching Episode 24 of Hanasaku Iroha, I’ve had one thought overriding everything else that’s going on in this series right now, and that is that Ohana doesn’t deserve Ko. But despite that belief, I still want to see them get together in the end.

Hanasaku Iroha 14 – We’re not done yet

So seeing that wordpress didn’t want me to post episode 13 last week, I’ll just recap on what I would have babbled on about last week. Episode 13 was kind of an important milestone in the series in that Ohana finally comes full circle and realises who she is and where she belongs. To a lesser extent, last week she also made up with her mother & grandmother as well as dealing with her getting dumped by Ko.

Dear Poro: I’m sorry for your gain.

So after casually mentioning that I’d wished I’d picked AnoHana instead of Hanasaku this season, Poro’s very kindly offered to swap. However, rather than just handing it off to him for the remaining 19 episodes, I thought it would be more fun to review Episode Seven together. I have to admit that I wasn’t sure if I wanted to switch with Poro just in case Hanasaku decided to get good again, but after watching this episode… I think I’m ready to say good bye.

Is anyone even still watching Hanasaku? Tell me I’m not alone in tolerating this show – although, I would be sad if there was more than just me still tolerating this show. What happened!? How did this happen? I know there’s still plenty of time for Hanasaku to make up for its lack of good content – twenty episodes, to be exact – but the bigger question is whether or not anyone’s going to still be watching if and when this show tries to pick up.
