12 Days of Anime #11: noitaminA; a Good Return

As today is the 1st Thursday of our 12 Days of Anime series I thought it be appropiate to cover the one thing that we all look forward on a Thursday. Yep, I’m talking about noitaminA.

noitaminA

Supposedly the slot reserved for the top rated anime of the season but has that held true for the year?

No. 6 – episodes 10 & 11. That’s a wrap.

So, remember my last episodic post? Where I ragged on No. 6 largely due to the fact that it was crawling along with very little happening? Well, things did happen in the last two episodes, problem is, it just wasn’t worth it.

So join me in one final post about No. 6. I’ll be discussing the last two episodes and giving my thoughts on the series as a whole. Thank god the seasons almost over.

No. 6 – Episodes 8 & 9.

Wow, another double episode post? Yeah, I’ve been slacking off, but I do have my reasons. I wish I could have posted last week, but I’ve just been so busy. What with the 40 hour power cut I had, tests every day last week, and the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, (which is a masterpiece that everyone should play) I’ve barely had any time to watch these episodes, let alone write about them, but I’m devoted to you guys, so here are my thoughts on what No. 6 has been up to. I’m gonna try something different this time, instead of just summarising the episode with short thoughts at the end, I’ll be primarily communicating my thoughts and see how it goes, besides, if you’re reading this, you probably already know what’s been happening plot-wise. Enjoy.

No. 6 – Episode 7

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to bring this up, but if you enjoy high concept sci-fi (which, if you’ve been following No. 6 up until this point, you most likely do) and you haven’t done so already, I absolutely recommend reading Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. It shares many common themes with No. 6 and is (in my opinion) one of the greatest sci-fi novels ever written, alongside the works of George Orwell, William Gibson and Philip K. Dick (In case you haven’t noticed, I have a thing for Sci-Fi).

Anyway, enough of that, let’s talk No. 6, shall we?

No. 6 – Episodes 5 & 6

The first show I’ve ever blogged and I’ve already had two posts in which I cover 2 episodes at once, I’m getting sloppy. The reason I’m late (though it’s never too late, as regular readers of the blog should know) is that I was away last weekend checking out a university I plan on attending  after school, I planned on blogging during my downtime, but I didn’t even get a chance to watch episode 5, let alone write about it. Sorry, it shouldn’t happen again anytime soon. Anyway, we now return to our regularly scheduled No. 6 episodic blogging.

Shion’s mother, Karan, has received Nezumi’s message about Shion being safe and having escaped to the west district. Her response?

No. 6 – episode 3

That mark on Shion’s neck from last episode? Yep, turns out it was the same parasite that killed Yamase, which should have been pretty obvious at this point, how else did you expect him to suddenly get white hair?

No. 6 – episodes 1 & 2

No. 6 has been generally regarded as “that other noitaminA show that isn’t Usagi Drop”. A bit of a shame really. Usagi Drop is great and all but No. 6 is by no means inferior to it, in fact so far I’ve been enjoying No. 6 far more than Usagi Drop, thanks (in no small part) to the absolutely wonderful setting and artistry at work here. One of the world’s most prolific sci-fi authors is Philip K. Dick; you may have heard of him, a lot of his books have been adapted into very successful movies, most notably ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’, which was adapted as Blade Runner, one of my favourite movies. No. 6 is very clearly influenced by his works and it shows: the world of No.6 looks spectacular, and everything just feels sophisticated, from the ID bracelets everyone is required to wear to the maintenance robots. This is undoubtedly one of the best looking shows of the season, and I’m so glad to be blogging it.
