Welcome to blindability’s WordPress Tutorial! (Dedicated to all the new writers who make my life a whole lot easier, haha.) I’m not an expert on WordPress usage but this is how I get by – and if I can do it, anyone can. I’ve always found one of the best ways to learn anything is through trial and error, so if you don’t agree with anything I’ve put in this tutorial… consider it one of my many on-going errors.
Generally I start by getting all my writing done first. Once I know where my paragraphs are and the general flow of my review/essay, I’ll have a better idea of where I want images inserted. The tool bar above allows you to change the style of your font, the alignment of your paragraph, the colour of your text and so on. It’s important to keep in mind the background colour of your blog before changing the colour of your text though.
There are a few “Add” options and features, but only a couple of them work on our WordPress account. (I have no idea what “Add Custom Form” means or does, haha.)
If you want to add a poll to any post, you’ll have to register with Polldaddy if you haven’t already got an account with them.
Linking to other sites or posts is simple: Just highlight the text that you want to be your link and click the link button. There are a few options once you’ve clicked the link button, like if you want to add a link title or if you want the link opened in a different window or tab. It’s just as easy to unlink something: Highlight the link and press the unlink button! (There are hot/command keys as well if that’s more your thing.)
When it comes to adding an image to your post, there are a few options:

You can always change/edit the title of your image after you’ve uploaded it and you can add a caption as well if you’d like; it’ll show up like the image above. You can also adjust the alignment and display size of your image, depending on where you want it and how big you want it to look. Once you’re done uploading your image, just click the “Insert into Post” button and it’ll appear in the body. Sometimes it takes a bit of fiddling with (that is, where you insert your image), and flipping between the composition screen and preview screen will help you adjust where to insert your image so it shows where you want it to when the post is published.
Once your image has been inserted into the body of your post on the content screen, you can click on it and a couple of options will come up:
The options in Edit Image are similar if not exactly the same as when you Insert Image: alignment, title, alternate text, caption, link… The only difference here is that you have an image percentage size. For my full sized images, I tend to reduce the display size in this section to 90% because I feel it fits better within the parametres of the screen. This is all personal preference though, and you can experiment with it as you go along.
Categories and Tags are along the right hand side of your post screen:
Categories can only be added and edited by Admin Users (who currently are Brian, jGLZa, and blindability), so please contact us if you want us to add or edit anything. Tags, however, are open to all to create and add and reuse.
There are a couple of uhh other features like, you can Copy a Post that’s been previously published. I’ve never done this before and I’m not 100% sure how it works, but I’m sure it works. Somehow. You can also change the author of a post – this is helpful if you’re doing a collab with someone since we haven’t figured out how to have multiple authors for a single post yet. Just remember: if you change the author to someone else, you won’t be able to access or edit it anymore. You can also remove the option of comments and track/pingbacks.
When all is written and done, and all the right boxes and circles have been clicked on and marked off, it’s time to Publish! But even then there are several things to look at and consider:
If you’re not quite ready to publish your post yet, you can save it as a draft – and it’s a good idea to save throughout your composition process just in case (power outage; internet droppage; total computer failure).

how do you add a personalized banner to the site? I’ve literally looked everywhere – I don’t want to pay for anything though.
hmm. that depends on the “theme” you have for your blog, but most themes allow a personalized banner. as for where to get it, you can either create one of your own, or get someone to do it. fortunately, we had someone design ours for us without cost.
How do I do the parent tag thing in WP? I just can’t make it work. T_T
By parent tag, do you mean categories? Because you can add a category without having it filed under a “parent category” which means it would a “parent category” in and of itself. In the future, you could file other categories with this category as a parent category.
I hope that (1) makes sense, and (2) works, haha. I’m kind of confused myself…
Uh, I kinda don’t get it. So how do I do this parent category thing? I’m aiming to make my categories like yours, because mine’s like this.

Hmm. Okay: so add a category – for example, “manga”. Once added, this becomes a parent category. So later, if you wanted to review Eyeshield 21 as a manga, you would add the category “Eyeshield 21″ and under the parent tab, you would scroll to select manga. Eyeshield 21 will then be listed as a category under the over-arching manga category.
If you still don’t quite get it, give me a few days and I’ll put together another tutorial about categories and add it to the page just for you. Just leave me a comment to let me know if you figure it out or not before I complete the tutorial, haha.
