H2O -FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND- (Anime Preview)

I have no idea what to expect from this anime. Even from its title, H2O -FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND-, I can’t figure out anything to make up for the story. However this is one of the few promising titles this season, so I took a peek into the story. And no, this anime is not a chemistry-related sci-fi spinoff. It would be unlikely that the H2O referred here is the chemical name for water. There must be a significance of the name to the story. At least, that is what the trailer for this anime would suggest.

Kohinata Hayami walked up to a hill and looked at the surrounding scenery when she heard a boy screaming from far. The boy was being chased by a wild boar and he was with a girl named Otoha who claimed herself to be a spirit. He came out running from the woods and Hayami who saw this tackled him from being overrun by the wild boar.He wanted to know who is the person on top of him and began to touch her face and all the way to her breast. Naturally that comes by with a big slap on his face. He explained that he is blind though the cause is unknown despite of being diagnosed with nothing in particular to have cause the blindness. He apologized to her for what happened earlier and introduced himself as Hirose Takuma. She brought him to the road leading straight to the school and let him go there alone. Students in the school began to talk about the coming transfer student from the city to their peaceful village. Kagura Hinata was carrying teaching materials for her class when she dropped them on the floor later. It was then she came across with Takuma who arrived at the school and poke around her butt with his cane. Soon later he was introduced to his class and Hinata introduced herself to her as the student council president. Then Hayami came to the class and was scolded by the teacher for coming in late. However Takuma defended her as he said that she helped him to walk the way to school. After class, Hinata and some of her classmates – Yakumo Hamaji and Kumon Maki – brought him around the school building and he revealed his ability to smell precisely the scent of each different room inside the school. It was then they bumped into Tabata Yui, the self-proclaimed beauty and leader of the school. In layman terms, it’s queen bitch. But that is not the case though. Yui gotten upset with the girls poking fun at her and she barged onto them, causing Hinata to fall on top of Takuma. And being on top, I mean her butt with her panties exposed straight on Takuma’s face. I guess being blind can have some perks of being ignorant. In the end, Hinata brought Takuma to the school’s infirmary to have him rested on the bed though he assured her that it was nothing serious.

Hayami and Otoha. Does this suggest anything about Takuma with Hamaji?

After Hinata left the room, Otoha jumped onto Takuma from the window. Now I am very convinced that Otoha is truly a spirit of some sort. Either that or Takuma is a mental whack job. Meanwhile Hinata returned to her class and saw Hayami with a notebook on top of her desk being scribbled with “Roach Woman.” I don’t know what the whole deal of her being hated but this is something really weird unless there is a call for explanation. It’s then lunch time and Yui began her duty to serve all students in the class with equal amount of food. Are you kidding me? Is the school some sort of a prison? Takuma was all head on his earlier encounter with Otoha who told him that he can see again and said that all he needs to do is to believe. He found this hard to believe because he is sure that he is blind but Otoha convinced him that he is the Promised One and she would lend her powers to him. Telling him not to give up, in that split moment, he was able to see her with his eyes wide open. He was shocked, really. Takuma came back to his senses when Hinata brought lunch for him. Then Yui made a fuss about someone taken more calamari ring and immediately she suspected Hayami as the culprit. As soon as Yui made her verdict, her henchmen quickly pinned Hamaji on her desk as Yui began questioning him. Yet again, Takuma stood by her and explained that he might took the extra portion as he is a new student there. However Hamaji told Takuma to stop meddle with her problems and as a reaction, she went over to the remaining calamari ring and spilled them on the floor. Takuma wanted to chase after her and bring Hinata along but Hinata reckoned that they better don’t. Obviously someone need to do some explaining here. Even so, Takuma went on ahead to find Hamaji alone. Trusting his guts, he found her as she about to leave the school but he fell over the stairs. Thankfully she was swift enough to catch him from falling. As Takuma said out her name Kohinata (you might know this already that Japanese refer a person by their surname) but she insisted to be called Hamaji because she hates her family name. I wonder if her family had something to do with her being hated by everyone in her school.

She brought him to an office as she began preparing her instant ramen to settle her lunch. Takuma cited that the village people are nice and kind but after what had happened, he began to think otherwise. However she seemed to be ignoring her. As she began eating her instant ramen, her slurp made his stomach growling. So she offered him a bite. He said that the ramen is delicious though she insisted that it is just an instant one. Then Yui’s underlings came over with the intention to hurt her for the ruckus she made earlier. Takuma once again made another attempt to protect her but this time instead, she volunteered herself to get things done and told Takuma to quit intervening into her troubles anymore as he was not able to do anything about it. By sunset, everyone returned home – Hamaji walking limping after took some punches from the boys earlier while Takuma returned to his place, still thinking about Hamaji’s words earlier. That night he woke up from his sleep when Otoha, this time making a fly-by entrance, appeared to him and asked him if he hates being powerless. She then reached out for his hand and right after that, they were transported to the beach. She ran to the water and called out for Takuma to come to her. And so he did with baby steps. Eventually he made it to her arms and she commented that he was able to do it. She also also added that it is not that he can’t do it but he thinks that he can’t. This would likely suggest for his idiopathic blindness. Meaning that his mental state tells him that he is blind but he is really not. However she also said that her gift to him is just for a short moment as well. Possibly that he would only gain his vision temporarily, I guess. True enough, what Otoha told him is real. That morning, he went on to the hill where Hamaji is and said of how beautiful the scenery is from the hill. Turning to Hamaji with his eyes open – not blind, he outstretched his hand to her and invited her to go to school together. And this is one unexpected twist of events.

I’m still figuring who this guy is but I guess this might be his uncle judging by his age.

All it takes is a kiss from Otoha…

…to have Takuma get his sight back.

It has very sentimental opening, talking something about footprints, how God was there during happy times but not there when things gotten tough. Oh I’ve heard this too many times in many stories. From this opening alone, I expect a strong sense of emotion partake in the story, giving it an edge to feel more engaging than many other stories. As for what H2O stands for, it was revealed at the end of the story that it actually stands for three female characters of the story – Hayami, Hamaji, and Otoha. Not sure about the Hamaji part though because she kept a low profile so far and it was Hinata (the other H-initialed girl) who took a big role in the story. Possibly that she would be so until the end of the story. How Hamaji would develop later towards the end of the story, that we have to wait and see. The sceneries shown in this episode gives a promising start with good range of colour palettes and good drawing details. The character design is somewhat moe and that would give away the mediocre animation. The voice acting is good though Takuma sounded too feminine to me but it is still fine for me. Already in this first episode, questions popping out for what the story really is all about – Otoha being someone or something supernatural sort of spirit or maybe it is just a figment of Takuma’s imagination; Hayami being that bitter, lonely girl who always get bullied by students inside the school (even the teachers act untowardly to her) and this easily brings out these two questions of why was she being ill-treated and whether suicide is at play at the end of the story (think Myself; Yourself); and of course Takuma, a supposedly blind boy who shares the amount of sorrow in his life and took a surprising turn of event when somehow he was able to see again. I think. This much of curiosity would have me decided to follow the story closely. In this sense, I mean I’ll be blogging this.
