A year of sequels

You might have already heard of this but Full Metal Alchemist is getting a second season. The gist of what I got was that it will follow the manga storyline rather than the anime version, which branched off to a different story about halfway through. It looks like it will follow in the same timeslot that Code Geass R2 and Gundam00 season 2 are filling, which means it looks like it will start spring 2009.

And you know what’s going to happen don’t you. Every fansub group in the world and their granny’s will be subbing FMA season 2 and there is a high chance that some of the other shows will be subbed very slowly. Their could be a new fan favorite show lying in that heap, the new FMA so to speak. And when that shows second season is announced in 2010, every fansub group and their granny’s will be out to sub it.

I have more to say so click on the read more button. Unless you’ve already pressed it, because then this line will just look rather silly and misplaced.

Yup, these are all the sequels I could find that were released this year, and this doesn’t count movies or OVA’s or anything that isn’t a tv series. So as you can see there have been a LOT of sequels released. I don’t think this is really a good thing. Think about Hollywood and how many sequels they release and are they ever as good as the original? It’s pretty much the same with animes, the sequel is rarely as good as the original.

The thing is that sequels make money. Think about it, when you look at the preview for the next season, the first things you instantly tick off to put on your watch list are the sequels, like Gundam 00 season 2 or Clannad after story. There is a very high chance neither of these will be as good as the first season 1 (While I really liked season one of Clannad, I don’t see this season being great). But it will be these shows that attract the most viewers, which is why studios will keep making them.

I’m calling for more originality and less sequels here. But, of course, when spring 2009 comes around, what will be first on my list? FMA season 2 of course. If they ever announce a Baccano season 2 or a Full Metal Panic sequel, then I’ll instantly go watch it. The Darker than Black sequel is probably going to be made and I’m already looking forward to that. When Haruhi Season 2 is finally announced there is going to be complete madness amongst the anime community. And yes, I went to both the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels.

And on a final note, do we really need a Rosario + Vampire sequel?

Skip Rosario to Vampire. Bring on Nodame Cantibile and Gundam 00. Sequels to DTB and Baccano too would be great though I highly doubt there will be one for Baccano. I find it odd that DTB has yet to announce any sequel despite having a good fanbase. Either way, FMA may have good fanbase but I won’t be that guy to watch it. =/ BTW, another sequel you forgot to mention is Jigoku Shoujo.

Gah! I was sure there would be at least one sequel I missed.

The thing is although I’m delighted to see new Nodame and new FMA, when you take a step back and look at all the sequels it gets worrying. And no, I can’t see a Baccano sequel either unless it does really well outside of Japan because it didn’t do well in there.
