Animation Nation 2008 – 29th Oct Coverage Part I

Putting aside Gundam 00 for a moment, let’s delve into the films at Animation Nation 2008 on 29th Oct. 0ne (previously known as Zero), one of the oldest otaku around already did an overview of what Animation Nation 2008 will/had offered.

Basically, Animation Nation 2008 is a combination of workshops, seminars and showcase of japanese films directed and produced by noteworthy directors and studios brought to singapore by Singapore Film Society(SFS) supported by Media Development Authority of Singapore(MDA). Being in the NUS Comics and Animation Society, I was given the chance to be the usher/ticket collector for yesterday’s event with ‘payment’ in the form of free viewing. This way, I caught the last 45mins of The Piano Forest and Genius Party, an anthology of seven short animated films from Studio 4°C:

The Piano Forest (Piano no mori)

First off, the Piano Forest, which was adapted from the manga, Piano no Mori released in 1999. From ANN,

Plot Summary:

“Amamiya Shu transfers to Moriwaki elementary filled with hope and ambition. But it doesn’t take long before he gets picked on by the class bullies, and gets involved in a dare to play the mysterious piano in the forest. Igniting his meeting with an equally enigmatic child that goes by the name of Ichinose Kai, who seems to be the only one capable getting sound out of the thought to be broken piano. “

Genres: drama, tournament
Themes: Piano
Japanese Cast:

Aya Ueto as Ichinose Kai
Ryunosuke Kamiki as Shuuhei Amamiya
Chizuru Ikewaki as Reiko Ichinose
Hiroyuki Miyasako as Sousuke Ajino
Mayuko Fukuda
as Takako Maruyama
Atsuko Tanaka as Namie Amamiya
Hiroyuki Amano as Chinpira
Junji Takada as Judge
Kazuko Kurosawa
as Hostess
Mayumi Tanaka
as Shiraishi
Rica Matsumoto
as Daigaku Kanehira
Udo Suzuki
as Old man

We have a mish mesh of new seiyuus, the most noteworthy being Mayuko Fukuda who was the actress for Maka in L change the world as well as established seiyuu such as Atsuko TANAKA who was the seiyuu for Maokoto from Ghost in the shell and many other anime. 53 year old Mayumi TANAKA (are they related) could give her a run for her money as well with roles in many anime, such as krillin from dragonball (bet you didn’t know that) and for One Piece. Rica MATSUMOTO ends the brilliant cast of Seiyuus and all that is left is for the director to deliver. And did he? You bet Masayuki KOJIMA under the studio Madhouse did. This animated feature was nominated for the 2008 Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year, as well as the Theatrical Film category at the 2008 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Piano Forest debuted in 9th place at the Japanese box office the week it came out, unusually high for a non-franchise animated film(franchise anime : bleach, naruto etc.).

As I only watched the last 45 minutes of it, I have no choice but to ‘acquire’ a copy of it and rewatch it. Watch this space for an updated review of it in due time AFTER I finish with Gundam 00 3rd episode.

God, grant me a gundam piano in the forest.

P.S. I did learn up to grade 6 on the piano my grandma bought for me.
