Winter Anime Season Preview: 2008/09

Just about got this out before the new season started….well, asides from the ones that aired online already, seems to be a new trend. What more can I say, onto the previews!
If there happens to be nothing worthwhile this season, there's always more Xam'd

If nothing worthwhile appears this season, at least there's always more Xam'd

Studio: Brains Base

Air Date:  3 Jan

Number of episodes: –

Additional Notes:Based off Manga

Summary: The story revolves around a typical high school boy named Kakeru Daichi and the can of melon juice soda that he bought from a vending machine. The can suddenly transforms into a beautiful but standoffish girl that Kakeru nicknames “Melon,” and more “Akikan” (”empty can”) girls appear. However, Akikangirlsneed to be infused with carbon dioxide from kissing to survive

Scamp: Everything about this screams utter crapness. I’ve read reviews of the first episode and I don’t think I’ll even bother. It’s as though Brains Base have decided ‘oh, when we try makesomething of genuine quality like Baccano, it doesn’t sell well. Let’s makea show with lots of scantily clad underage girls! That should sell better than Baccano’. The sad thing is, it probably will.

Asu no Yoichi

Air Date: 8 Jan

Number of episodes:

Additional Notes:Based off manga

Summary: The titular character Yoichi decides to leave his family’s mountainside home after his father tells him there is nothing more he can learn in martial arts there. The teenaged boy ends up in a martial arts dojointhe city with four girls

Scamp: I’ve heard that the main guy suffers from the trip and grope disease. You know, the whole trip and grope thing is actually pretty funny the first few times. But not after the bizzilionth time. This looks like Sekirei, so again, doesn’t look great.

Chrome Shelled Regios

Studio: ZEXCS

Air Date: 10 Jan

Number of episodes: –

Additional Notes: Based off Short Novels

Summary: The world was infected by “Pollutant” years ago – world cracked open and generally screwed up. This Pollutant spawns nasty “Pollutant Beasts”, but it’s also resulted in people gaining special powers. The towns that now litter the world are protected by alchemists and are mobile – these are the “Regios” of the title. The story follows a guy named Lei-Fon Alseif who starts at a new school following the disappearance of his childhood friend and gets recruited into the special 17th Platoon in order to combat Pollutant Beasts

Scamp: I was originally vaguely interested in this until I read reviews of what it’s based off and they were NOT good. So I wouldn’t expect much from this. It’s not like ZEXCS have that much quality on board to change an already bad story into a good anime

Hetalia: Axis Powers

Studio:Studio Deen

Air Date: 24 Jan

Number of episodes: 24

Additional Notes:Based off web manga. Each episode is 5 minutes long

Summary: Italy, once home of the strongest empire in the world, has changed. This is the story of Italy, now a cowardly pasta-loving fool, and his friends (other personified countries of the world) as they live through strange moments in world history.

Scamp: Racial stereotypes are the best type of humour! I’ve been told that this is one of the funniest things I’ll ever see, but admittedly that has been from women. If this can do more than fangirl pandering and provide some genuinely funny satirical historical wit, then I’ll be delighted! Not only that, they’ve picked the best part of history to make fun of. I wonder how good Japanese knowledge of European history is?

Kemono no Sou-ja Erin

Studio:Production IG

Air Date: 10 Jan

Number of episodes: 50

Additional Notes: Based off novels by same author as Serei no Moribito

Summary: After Erin’s mother, a veterinarian, is executed for allegedly for killing a batch of fighting snakes, she is raised by a beekeeper and meets the king of animals in the mountains. She is inspired to become a veterinarian herself, a decision that will put the fate of the kingdom in her hands.

The story is about a young woman who is drawn into a war between kingdoms. She has the ability to command animals, including dragons, as if she was playing a musical instrument.

Scamp: I keep finding different versions of the summary so it’s kinda hard to guess what the story is actually about, although based on the promo picture it has dragons! Actually I didn’t get into Moribito, but I’m willing to give this a shot if IGput as much effort into the animation as they did with Moribito. It’s 50 episode show that isn’t generic shonen, I want to like this

Studio: Sunrise

Air Date: 8 Jan

Number of episodes:

Additional Notes:Based off Korean manga

Summary: Keita Ibukiis a computer programmer who, withtwoof his friends, is developing and trying to sell a video game program. He has a chance meeting with a high Mototsumitama named Kuro. He gives her his dinner, a bowl of ramen, and tries to protect her when she is surprise attacked by another Mototsumitama. He loses his left arm, but she exchanges it with her left arm

Scamp: The mangahas gotten good reviews, the summary sounds cool and the promo picture looks great, what’s not to like! The only worry I have is that Sunrise are going to change the plot around. That can sometimes be a good thing, but when the first change I heard was they changed the main character from a collage student to a high school one…

Maria Holic

Studio: SHAFT

Air Date: 4 Jan

Number of episodes: –

Additional Notes:Based off  manga

Summary: The story centers on a sophomore named Kanako who enrolls in all-girls school because she has a phobia of men and wants to find her destined yuri partner. She meets a captivating freshman named Mariya who fits her criteria — except her seemingly ideal mate happens to be a cross-dressing sadistic boy.

Scamp: And the award for the most eye-catching summary is… It’s made to appeal to the hyper-critical trope loving otakus who populate the blogsphere, it’s too bizarre to ignore. The manga has good reviews too. If Hetalia turns out to be a fangirl pandering show, then this what I’m placing my comedic hopes on.

Ride Back

Studio: Madhouse

Air Date: 11 Jan

Number of episodes: 12

Additional Notes:Based off manga

Summary: Ride Backtells the story of a girl a her “Iron Horse” robot motorcycle in 2020, a tumultous time of anti-government student protests

Scamp: I had this pegged the moment I saw it and I keep seeing more reasons to be excited. Quoting from Can you Moe? ‘According to those who have already watched the first episode (pre-screened), quality and direction of the first episode was superb‘ and again from Can you Moe the director said the original manga material would be too controversial for TV airing if animated faithfully’. I’ve  seen the promo video along with a bunch of screenshots and the animation quality is top-notch again from Madhouse. This is my pick of the season without a doubt

Sora Kake Girl

Studio: Sunrise

Air Date: 5 Jan

Number of episodes: –

Additional Notes: Original Sunrise creation

Summary: The story is set in the year 311 of the Orbital Calendar, when humanity has migrated to countless colony clusters in space. A space colony girl named Akiha Shishidō encounters a malevolent artificial intelligence named Leopard that has been installed on a colony. Akiha is joined by an Inter-Colony Police officer named Itsuki Kannagi, a taciturn young girl named Honoka Kawai, and a robot named Imoko “Imo-chan” Shishidou

Scamp:Has it become cool to hate Sunrise now? They constantly provide some of the most entertaining shows in existence. A Sunrise original production is something that people should get excited about, especially since it’s very rarely we ever see an original anime production anymore. Now, to be dismissing this on accounts of the unbelievably generic character designs is another thing, but I’m going to hope for entertainment anyway

Sora no Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai

Studio: Kyoto Animation

Air Date: 14 Jan

Number of episodes: –

Additional Notes:Original Kyoto Animation work. Alternate retelling of Kyoto’s original Munto OVA

Summary: Akuto, the main source of energy is running low and the Heavens, a world of islands, hidden beyond time, floating above ours, has united against the Magical Kingdom whom uses the most energy. To save both the Magical Kingdom and the Heavens and restore the flow of akuto, the Magical King Munto must follow a vision and find the girl Yumemi in the lower world. Yumemi herself is just a normal girl except that she is the only one who can see the islands of the Heavens floating above. When Munto appears before her she starts thinking about hers and others responsibility to the world.

Scamp: For a KyoAni work, the animation looks rather drab. Their original Munto production hasn’t exactly received grand reviews. I almost hope that this will suck because I’m sick of KyoAni fanboys proclaiming every work of theirs is a masterpiece. This is their only anime that is entirely their own work. This will be the true test of how good KyoAni actually are.

Viper’s Creed

Studio: Sony Pictures Entertainment

Air Date: 6 Jan

Number of episodes: –

Additional Notes:

Summary: The story revolves around the members of a private military company (PMC), and the uneasy tension between them and the regular military after a war that caused massive environmental destruction

Scamp:Attempting to summon enthusiasm for generic action anime…failed.

White Album

Studio: Seven Arcs

Air Date: 3 Jan

Number of episodes: –

Additional Notes: Based off Date Simulation Game

Summary: The White Album game centers around Tōya Fujī, a college student dating a rising idol singer named Yuki Morikawa. The game deals with the challenges to the couple’s relationship from the other people at Fujī’s college, Morikawa’s work, and elsewhere

Scamp: This is NOT my type of show. Next

Birdy the Mighty Decode 2

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Air Date: 9 Jan

Number of episodes: 13

Additional Notes:  Based off Manga – Remake of 1996 OVA

Summary: Tsutomu Senkawa is an average high school kid who is busy studying for his senior entrance exams. Tsutomu goes out for some fresh air, after a hard day’s work studying for a big test, when he runs into a guy fleeing from a pretty young lady. The pursued man is actually an interplanetary criminal on the run from a Federation agent called Birdy Cephon Altera. Caught in the midst of this chase, Tsutomu gets thrown by the man at Birdy, which kills Tsutomu. Fortunately for Tsutomu, there is a way to keep him alive, although it comes at the price of discarding his body. He ends up merged into Birdy’s body.

Scamp:The first season ended up being pretty uninspired. Flashy, but ultimately lacking in any real depth or quality. I’ll give the second season a whirl just in case in ends up being better, but forgive me for being sceptical.

Minami-ke: Okaeri

Air Date: 4 Jan

Number of episodes: 13

Additional Notes:Based off Manga

Summary:This school-aged slice-of-life comedy follows the lives of the three Minami sisters: Haruka (oldest), Kana (the middle child), and Chiaki (youngest).

Scamp: Unlike quite a lot of the anime world, I liked the second season of Minami-ke. Providing that stupid, lifeless kid has really left from next door, I’ll gladly continue to watch the Minami sisters.

Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou

Studio: Brains Base

Air Date: 5 Jan

Number of episodes: 13

Additional Notes:Based off Manga

Summary:Since she could see monsters, Natsume Reiko was alienated by normal people. In order to escape from the loneliness, she challenged monsters to fights. She took away their names, binding them to obedience, and put the names in a contract book, “Yujin-cho”. Her grandson, Natsume Takashi, has inherited Reiko’s ability to see monsters. He obtains Yujin-cho, an article left by his only relative, Reiko, and he resolves to return to the monsters their names which were taken away from them. Since then, various monsters begin to gather around him

Scamp: I blogged the first season and it turned out to be a surprisingly enjoyable series. I hope they stick to just a second season though, any longer and it might lose its charm
