Anime openings and endings by popular western bands

After the rather nice surprise of hearing Oasis singing the opening for Eden of the East, I did a little research to check what other anime had songs sung by popular western bands with plans to write a post about them. Then I instantly forgot until 3 moths later when I came across an anime opening sung by the Backstreet Boys. So I decided to go back and write the post, even though it’s not quite the hot topic it was when Eden was airing.

1: Eden of the East OP – Falling Down – Oasis

It’s too early to see how Eden will go down in anime history but this opening song is still one of the best I’ve ever seen. Not so much for the song itself though. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Oasis and this song is indeed great, but what makes the opening so awesome is the sheer amount of fore-shadowing done (the King has come anyone?). Plus with the movies still on their way you’re still not sure whether there’s more clues hidden in the opening or whether Eden is still throwing us red herrings.

Speed Grapher OP – Girls on Film – Duran Duran

This opening caused a bit of fuss because when it was brought over to America they weren’t able to get the rights to show the opening, which is why there’s a fair amount of people panicking that the same could happen to Eden. The song is indeed pretty cool but the actual video is all a bit weird. Meh, I don’t plan to watch Speed Grapher anytime soon

Hanada Shounen Shi OP – The One – Backstreet Boys

Yeah I know, Backstreet Boys. Certainly a bit random. I actually kinda like the Backstreet Boys (they’re certainly better than any other shitty boyband) but I don’t really like this song. How such an obscure anime got a Backstreet Boys song is beyond me though.

Ergo Proxy ED – Paranoid Android – Radiohead

If you know anything about music then you are supposed to be in awe of Radiohead. Which just goes to show I know nothing about music, I think they suck. I suppose the song suits the slightly pretentious attitude of Ergo Proxy though but they could have come up with a more interesting ending animation.

Paradise Kiss ED – Do you want to – Franz Ferdinand

Saved the best ’till last! I’ve never seen Paradise Kiss but this still has to be one of the most fucking brilliant ending songs I’ve ever seen. It helps that I was already a fan of Franz Ferdinand but the animation is so wacky, it’s just fantastic! I’m going to be so disappointed if Paradise Kiss turns out to be a rubbish anime now.

And that’s it as far as I could see. There are some that are sung by lesser known western bands. Off the top of my head there’s the Serial Experiments Lain OP. Generally any opening with surprisingly good English is generally sung by an English speaking band. If you know anymore then leave a lovely comment.

Mushishi had a good English op song also, i thought. I cant really think of any others.

That’s a fucking intense opening! Then again I would hardly call that ‘sung by an english speaking band’. He said about 10 words and the rest was funky kick-ass techno

Ah yes, Alan Kerr or whatever his name was. Hardly a household name but I’ll give it to you.

Gankutsuou had Jean-Jacques Burnel doing the themes, and maybe some of the songs Origa’s done count, but I wouldn’t call either of them really big names.

There’s also the ED for Kuroshitsuji sung by Becca (or something). I think the song is called “I’m Alive” though I don’t really like it much. However, the animation is cute.

Just as a side note, I love the opening song for Mushishi by Ally Kerr. I find it very relaxing~

LOL OMG… I never knew about Backstreet Boys OP. That’s hilarious. Ah.. and Speed Grapher. Too bad it didn’t live up to its potential.

Didn’t know about Backstreet Boys. And Becca is not entirely Western. True, she’s American and sings English songs thus far. But she is based in Japan, which is a weird platform to begin an English music career. Then again, she’s not the only one. If you mean by English songs, there’s a lot. Especially when Yoko Kanno is involved.

Ah I remember that Becca song now. I thought the english was too good to be a Japanese singer.

Thought of another one BTW. Fly me to the moon anyone?

Oooh, how about the Deltora Quest OP number, ah, 3 or something, that was sung by Delta Goodrem? The song itself was okay, but I thought the actual OP sequence was… not so great.

Wow, I didn’t expect to see the Backstreet Boys X)
The animation for Paradise Kiss is nothing like in the ending, I really liked the series, it’s more of a girlie than anything else though considering it is about fashion, so if you think you would like that I would suggest giving it a go!
As for some other animes I can think of with no so popular bands/singers, Mushishi with “The Sore Feet Song” by Ally Kerr, The Light Before We Land” by The Delgados in Gunslinger Girl, and ”We Were Lovers” by Jean-Jacques Burne in Gankutsuou

Monster – David Sylvian – “For the Love of Life” (1st ending)

David Sylvian is the former lead singer of the famous British rock band Japan, and a subsequently-accomplished solo artist. This haunting song appears to have been written specifically for the anime.

Ravemaster – Reel Big Fish – “Raveolution” (American release opening)

This hilarious song was written specifically for the American release of this anime by one of the most popular ska bands ever. I can’t even imagine what was going through the heads of the American licensing company when they came up with this idea, nor can I imagine what Reel Big Fish was thinking when agreeing to do it. RBF must have watched some of the show to write the song, which perfectly describes the plot of the show….in ska. Regardless, I want some of what both parties were smoking, because I just love this absurd song.

The Ventures, the best selling instrumental band of all time, covered the Lupin the 3rd second series (red jacket) theme…awesomely.

Bôa – Serial Experiments Lain – “Duvet” (opening)

This was already mentioned at the end of the article, but I think deserves additional mention. This (excellent) song and the anime fandom that came with it seems to have contributed in significant proportion to Bôa’s otherwise indie fanbase. Anime helping a band’s success seems worthy of special note. Their first album is awesome, by the way; listen to it.

Mr. Big – Hellsing – “Shine” (ending)

American supergroup of the 90s and early 00s. Seems to be quite popular in Japan.
