First Impressions: Natsu no Arashi Season 2, Book of Bantorra, Letter Bee, Fairy Tail

I finally got my Crunchyroll membership and by god does their media player suck serious balls. The video keeps jerking the whole time. I’m allowed to bitch about CR because, unlike most of you people, I’ve spent my precious money on a membership. Mwahaha, just try to get me down off my high horse…ok, I’ll get down now and review these episodes…

My Rating System Explained!

A = If you watch anything this season, watch this

B = Very good, sometimes surprisingly so.

C = If you have the time, you should check this out

D = Not my kind of thing, I won’t be watching this

E = Bad. Very bad, ignore this show

F = Frustratingly awful

Natsu no Arashi Season 2

Note: This is a review of the first two episodes.

Natsu%20no%20Arashi!%20Akinai-chuu%20-%2001%20-%20Large%2014Natsu no Arashi was a rather unloved series this spring but it apparently had enough fans to warrant another season. I was one of those fans. Shaft finally toned down their  “>wackiness and finally created something that had a cast of lovable characters and a series that actually had more than one joke in its repitoire (remember, this was before Bakemonogatari)

Natsu%20no%20Arashi!%20Akinai-chuu%20-%2001%20-%20Large%2028I can’t really say the same about this season. The new op and ed aren’t great but my main problem has to be with the sudden dramatic increase in fanservice. It’s not like the first season didn’t have any but they’ve really been taking it to the extreme with the first two episodes, while at the same time not actually being that funny.

Natsu%20no%20Arashi!%20Akinai-chuu%20-%2001%20-%20Large%2039The first two episodes have used the same joke again and again, a joke whose potential was maximised last season and it’s really getting old now. There’s still glimpses of what made last season so enjoyable but it’s yet to hit that form with any sort of consistently yet this season.

Book of Bantorra

Note: This is a review of the first two episodes

Tatakau%20Shisho%20-%20The%20Book%20of%20Bantorra%20-%2001%20-%20Large%2007This has been the delightful surprise of the season so far. Even with what’s clearly a limited budget (hence the terrible-as-usual CGI) the action sequences are pretty darn exciting, even Darker than Black would be proud of them. It may be difficult to take the term ‘armed librarians’ seriously but if you don’t they will shoot you in the head.

Tatakau%20Shisho%20-%20The%20Book%20of%20Bantorra%20-%2001%20-%20Large%2023More importantly there is real thought gone into this world the characters inhabit. It’s slightly steampunk-ish, a bit like FMA with it’s super-powered people wandering around in dodgy organisations, although there’s yet to be any explanation as to why they have these magical powers. Plus I like the idea of the ‘meats’, they’re actually pretty darn creepy.

Tatakau%20Shisho%20-%20The%20Book%20of%20Bantorra%20-%2001%20-%20Large%2027The main problem I can see thus far is the fact that I don’t care for any of the characters yet because the show has been mainly focused on plot and exposition. Hopefully this should correct itself in the next few episodes. Episode 2 ended on a cliffhanger and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t really looking forward to the next episode.

Rating: B+

Letter Bee

vlcsnap-2009-10-11-19h49m40s129I’m blogging this series so there isn’t really much more I can say that I haven’t said already. This is certainly one of the better, if admittedly quieter anime of the season. With eye-catching artwork and great story-telling, this is really an anime you should be checking out.

Rating: B+

Fairy Tail

FAIRY%20TAIL%20-%2001%20-%20Large%2003Well that was a disappointment. So much about this episode was lackluster. The attempts at humour were all exaggerated yelling that mainly just got frustrating. The animation in particular was really lacking and the artwork lacked the imagination you might expect from a series set in a magical world.

FAIRY%20TAIL%20-%2001%20-%20Large%2012Normally with shounen series you can at least see what makes them popular yet Fairy Tale seems like such a half-hearted attempt. I was expecting this series to start off excellent only for it later to tail off as it got bogged down as most shounen do. Is Fairy Tale really only going to get worse?

FAIRY%20TAIL%20-%2001%20-%20Large%2023I admit the fight at the end was actually pretty cool and showed where the budget had actually gone but do I really want to invest my time in watching this series? Maybe for another episode or two to see if any sort of originality or imagination or even a funny joke shows up. If not, it’s straight for the dropped bin for this.

While I have faith in Natsu no Arashi turning out in the end like the previous season, I was starting to wonder if there was a lot more fanservice or if it was just me. I’m hoping that the double dose of Jun-centered scenes will lead to her actually being outed as a girl.

I really hope Natsu no Arashi picks up to it’s previous form as well. The problem is that after watching Bakemonogatari, every other Shaft anime just seems so…lacking now

Thats very true. If you think about it, its as if they’ve decided to keep their anime at a lower level since it may be easier.
