Darker than BLACK: Gemini of the Meteor episode 6

I know this comes in a little late but I can’t help it. Had my final exams for the past 2 weeks and I had to put this review on the backseat, despite this episode is the better one for the season. As predicted, Yin is alive though unconscious. Yet her lingering ghost suggests otherwise. And with special powers, Yin a.k.a. Izanami is the real deal of DTB this time around. That means BK201 is off the spotlight. More after the jump.

A brief family reunion.

Synopsis: It turns out that Michiru was in the Noah’s Ark to complete her remuneration, oddly by baking sponge cake. While Norio shared his love for Suou to his mother, she however warned him to stay away from her though he could not understand why did she say that. At the port, Mao is keeping a close observation to the submarine transport and the cargo they’re carrying. Meanwhile Hei found out that the truck he was on is actually a trap. Shizume is the one who was driving the truck. He used the truck to be his body armour and attacked Hei. Hei who is without his power was helpless against him. Shizume spilled out Izanami’s real identity and this fact surprised him. July who was observing the cargo told them that the cargo contains a person. Mao was surprised by this as their mission is to destroy the cargo. Suou however maintained her confidence that she is able to shoot at the cargo. Things did not go well for them as Hazuki decided out the other side of the port where they are. Mao instructed them to run, knowing that they are no match against Hazuki. Suou insisted to complete the mission but July revealed that the person in the cargo is actually Yin. Hei is still up front against Shizume saw his chance to escape as a car is passing by. Shizume failed to pursue him as he used the truck as his armour in the first place. At the port, Mao caught up to Suou who was ready to shoot when Hei managed to stop her in time. A fire was shot anyway and missed the target. Hei told them to escape while he provides the distraction as usual. Misaki on the other hand was concerned of Hei’s power to use electricity even in water. However Yoko assured her that Hei lost his contractor ability.

This somewhat mecha-like design reminded me of Kallen’s Gurren Mk. II.

Izanami is Yin, or what’s left of her.

In this squirrel body, Mao imitates more human-like gesture unlike his old cat body.

I think we’re seeing too much of this. Almost Sailormoon-like.

Suou and the rest managed to escape and got curious about Yin. Mao simply explained that she is the woman from Hei’s past. Suddenly they were confronted by Michiru. Elsewhere Norio was told by his friends that there is a fight between contractors and he immediately suspected that it was Suou and Michiru. Back to Suou, Michiru persuaded her to join them but she resisted. Michiru took this as a no but just about she was making her move, Yin’s ghost appeared and used her power to manipulate Michiru’s water-bending ability against her. At this time, Norio arrived at the scene but it was too late. Michiru was dead. Norio blamed Suou for killing his mother and pointed out that contractors have no problem killing people. Afterwards, Hei contacted the person he received instructions from and the person was none other than Madame Oreille. Hei decided to quit working for her and she reciprocated his decision. Suou on the other hand was conflicted by Hei’s move to not to kill Yin earlier. They then took a train to Tokyo to continue their pursuit for Yin. Misaki checked out on Izanami, saying that it was the one responsible to take away Hei’s ability. She got curious about Section 3 and Yoko warned her not to treat them as allies. Hei’s gang stayed in an abandoned house and he made a surprising move to cook for dinner though it was all canned food. He told Suou not to shoot ever again, saying that it doesn’t suit her. Hei ran out of alcohol and decided to go to the convenience store. Suou made a deal that she won’t shoot again in exchange that he will quit drinking alcohol. Hearing this, Hei changed his mind to get vegetables instead. At Noah’s Ark, Lebanon and Norio grieved for Michiru’s death although it was expected since she became a contractor. Leaving the convenience store, Suou noticed Yin’s ghost appeared next to Hei which then transpired into his body. Hei did not notice then asked her what’s wrong but she dismissed it.

Plan back-fired or in this case, back-watered.

Hei is trying his luck as Iron Chef now that he lost his Black Reaper status

Surprise, surprise! BONES making a tribute to Michael Jackson.

If there’s something strange in your neighbourhood, who you gonna call?

Thoughts: It’s interesting now that the writers intend to give Yin the central role of the story or more like a valuable asset to all parties involved. Madame Oreille’s involvement is particularly odd, given her assumed role as an informant. This involvement of hers may also raise some suspicion over her connection to The Syndicate or to an entirely different group. The latter would raise more brows but will spell more complexity to this already puzzling story. Nonetheless, the fact that Yin is still alive and that Hei is kicking his alcoholic habit (and slowly returning to his old self again) might be a good mood-changing turn of events. On other hand, the fact that Hei can  no longer use his power will leave him in a new position in the situation and possibly, give more room for Suou to seek out her true potential as a contractor, which I have yet to see so far into the story. I’m surprised that the writers decided to kill off Michiru early since this would also suggest a possible disengagement of Norio and Lebanon from the story. Meaning, we won’t probably be seeing them again. Not that I can any character potential from them both (and even Michiru) anyway. Speaking of character development, not much yet being told about Section 3 and their agents and provided that there’s only 13 episodes for this season, I doubt more could be revealed. What I am curious about at this point is whether Hei can regain his power back and whether Yin has truly returned her true self. What we know for now is her body as a vessel remains safe while her ghost seems to be lost though attached to Hei. More odd is that Hei could not see Yin’s ghost passing next to him and I wonder if this has anything to do with him losing his power.

I like how DTB2 kills off the characters quickly and decisively (like Michiru or April). It’s more effective than letting them linger around and the show gets bloated at the end. As for Hei, I still think he’ll somehow regain his power (keep my fingers cross).

@Canne: They did that since season 1. In fact, it was one contractor for each episode. Sometimes, two. And they’ll be dead by the end of each episode. Of course, they were killed by Hei most of the time. And don’t worry, I’m sure the writers will decide to give Hei’s powers back. Otherwise, he’s just another recently-repented abusive-alcoholic dad. Which makes him boring. All that matters to me though is that Yin is back!

Actually I’m pretty sure it’s been mentioned before that only contractors (or at least those with contractor powers) could see doll ghosts. That’s why Suou saw Yin but not Hei.

Totally enjoying your posts by the way, keep it up! : )

ACK! I agree that we’ve had more than enough of the “transformation sequence”; we know where Suou’s gun comes from already! Better things can be done with that short snippet of time.

I’m excited to see what Yin’s role will be in the series. The story is fantastic and mysterious as always. I’m still a little confused how Mao founds his way into Pecha’s body but whatever; it’s not a big deal.

And I’m DEFINITELY ready for Hei to stop drinking and hopefully clean up a little. I love how – despite losing his Contractor Abilities – he’s still quite an effective fighter.

Didn’t Michiru’s plan back fire because she didn’t finish her remuneration? I mean come on, if it was Yin that saved Suou, why would Suou be against Yin (as shown at the end of the episode when she kicks the pole were yin was hugging Hei).
Its possible that Suou didn’t see Yin when she saved her, but at least now we know that Yin is friendly to Suou… That is, IF Yin really saved her.

Because Suou is a still a brat =p

And Suou is jealous. She wants Hei all to herself.

@brian & kaza: I was wondering about that as well (because how come she kicks the post where she spotted Yin)

I hope Nori really is not seen again, because he was pretty annoying (if he was supposed to be a comical character, he is too easy and failed in my opinion) … btw, it seemed to me that Yin can use the contractor-ability against the contractors … but still I wonder how she can use it against other contractors (for example, is Sou supposed to shoot herself with that long big-ass weapon?! O_o)

anyway, nice episode and good review ^^

I agree with Loba and Brian: Suou is probably jealous and she’s still just a kid… And she probably barely understands her own feelings; love and affection are rarely rational emotions.

at Kaza: Yin might have saved Suou because she’s with Hei (and Mao). And I believe Michiru did complete her renumeration: baking a cake.

at takertoe: Yin’s medium is water, so that might be the only reason why she could use Michiru’s ability against her. But then again, we don’t know how Yin’s “evolved”… Although I suspect if Suou tried to shoot Yin, Hei wouldn’t let her – he already stopped her once.

@blindability: you are probably right … still, didn´t they mention before that “Izanami” alias Yin is an anti-contractor-weapon? so I figured it should be something special like using the own ability against a contractor, otherwise she would “just” be like another contractor whose element is water …

at takertoe: hmm… you got me there. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what Yin’s capable of as an anti-contractor weapon.
