12 moments in Anime #11: The Curry Fairy

Alternative Title: That moment when Asread stopped having characters walking through doors and table corners and actually animated something glorious. Alternative Title 2: This is just a 12 days post about Minami-ke Okaeri. Please don’t expect much.

So lets talk Minami-ke for a second. First season was good stuff. Not great and certainly not in the league of Azumanga but entertaining enough, mainly thanks to Minami Chiaki. I know other people like Minami ‘Boss’ Kana or everyones favourite loli trap (never thought I’d be putting those two words together) but personally it was Chiaki that made Minami-ke for me. Well, apart from Hosaka. He was awesome too.

Second season and the animation studio changed. We got to see the glories that was Asread. Character designs changed, not only from the first season but sometimes changed in the middle of an episode too! A lot of the characters stopped performing in the second season, most notably Hosaka but neither Kana nor Mako entertained me either. In fact only one character actually continued their fine form. Why yes, Chiaki continued to rock the entire way through the second season. She made that season watchable and thanks to her I was still around to watch the third season that aired this winter. For that I would like to thank you Chiaki. While you didn’t actually do that much in the third season, it was your efforts in the second season that kept me watching this show.

If anything the animation dropped in the third season even further. Ghost limbs floated off the body as characters leapt through the air and other terrible things happened but who freakin’ cares! Chiaki took a step back this season to let the others shine. Kana in particular shone quite brightly but so did Haruka’s school friends in their visits to the Minami household. But far more noticeably was the return to form of Hosaka. My favourite scene from anime last year was Kurenai the Musical. This year my favourite scene is yet another musical scene. Presenting Hosaka: The Curry Fairy!

    An excellent moment indeed. I may have spent more time rewatching this clip than I spent watching the entire remainder of the series.

    Hosaka is golden! And too funny to be missed. I can sense him sweating in exhilaration from all the attention we’re giving him.

    Ah, how could I have forgotten about this!

    @Baka-Raptor

    I’d say I’ve watched this clip about…oooh, 8-10 times?

    (Aha, one more big name blogger comments on the blog. All I need is Jason Miao and Danny Choo and I finally have the whole set)

    @Brian

    The idea of Hosaka sweating at our attention is both unnerving and strangly arousing

    @RP

    I nearly forgot about it too. This was one of the last 12 days posts I wrote.

    Hosaka is awesome. I’m glad he was featured more in the third season — seems like it scaled back Mako-chan a bit to give Hosaka more screen time, which is fine by me. (I love Mako-chan, but he is used WAY too much in the second season.)
