Should I watch this?

Kaza:

Many times we come across a show or a movie that is completely epic, and it really moves us. Yet, there is always that anime that will completely leave us in awe, shock, and purely traumatized. No, I don’t mean it in a good way, I mean it in such a way that if someone tells you not to watch it for these reasons, it’s most likely a very wise idea to listen and not watch it.

Ladies and gentlemen that take part in the anime world, this post is just that, a warning. I have been so utterly traumatized that I have dedicated a whole post to warn people of this danger, the danger of this show called “School Days”.

For the people that have watched this show are probably thinking, “This show is old!” Yes, I know that. But in the same way that there are people out there who haven’t the slightest clue what Naruto is, this might be the same case for someone out there looking for a fun romance related anime. And unfortunately, there are places that don’t describe this show for what it really is, thus it claims more victims.

I was one of them.

Mark Thomas, a member of the Mania website, wrote a little something about this show that I think explains it in a very clear way. Here’s the link for the whole thing he wrote. (which btw I think it’s a good idea you do take a look at this thing as a whole and not just this part)

Thoughts of the whole series:

If I had not known the ending to School Days going into it, I never would have believed that it would have gotten there after the first few episodes. It was certainly a drama, but the drama seemed like it was going to be a little more lighthearted than it ended up being. And frankly, it is like that for about the first half of the series. It is not until Makoto starts hooking up with Sekai, and Kotonoha starts going off the deep end, that the series really starts taking a dark turn. Granted, even up to that point, the characters are just about the most unlikeable bunch ever found in an anime, but that was more of a symptom of the plot than of any real darkness in theme.

But once Makoto officially moves onto Sekai, his relationships start falling south and so does the feeling of the series. Kotonoha refuses to believe that Makoto might be leaving her, so she falls out of all semblance of reality. She even gives herself up to Makoto’s friend Taisuke, though with his insistence and her emotional state, it could be considered date rape. When the final scene of the series shows Kotonoha having a romantic yachting trip with Makoto’s severed head, then it is obvious that she has a few problems.

Then there is Makoto’s insistance on sleeping with every girl he finds. Once he gets a taste of sexual relations, he cannot get enough, and he cannot see why he might be doing a bad thing. He cheats on anybody and everybody and feels no guilt over it. He even gets to sleep with Setsuna, Sekai’s best friend, if he just promises that he will never leave Sekai (a promise that he does not keep. And he completes his descent into jerkdom when he pushes Sekai away for having the gall to get pregnant.

And frankly, with all of this, School Days can be a bit uncomfortable to watch at times. It starts out pleasant enough; but by the end, no character has any redeeming qualities (some even go out of their way to be pure evil), and we have had to deal with the realities of vicious bullying, sexual deviance, rape, and murder. Even with all this, School Days is a very well done anime, but it is in no way a pick me up.

Yes, this was a bit of a spoiler for those who have not watched it. But there was no better way to show the level of darkness in this show without actually seeing it. I know, some people might be saying, “Kaza, stop ranting away dum things. People will just get more curious to watch it.”  Well, I sincerely hope that you all who do read this take it seriously and don’t let ‘curiosity kill the cat’.

MY OWN THOUGHTS OF THE SHOW-

First off, there were many girls out there who think that ‘justice was served’. And you know what, I really agree! … To some degree. Well fuck yea Makoto deserved to be punished (BADLY), but I only have one question. Why did Sekai have to die!?!? WHY!?

I’m sorry everyone. I’m just still trying to get over this horrid thing. Ugh…

    It is sad to see Sekai die but she started it lol
    Yeah, if you hate Makoto, don’t watch White Album hahaha

    Had the same question last time but ended up watching it anyway. There’s nothing to love about School Days, to be frank. The exception is the final episode because it’s the whole deal of the hype behind School Days.

    Whether or not you hate Makoto, don’t watch White Album. Seriously.

    heh heh, I eventually decided not to watch this. I was sorely tempted after I heard the ending but reviews that said the entire rest of the show was crap put me off it. Guess you fell into it’s trap.

    And yes, from what I’ve heard, don’t watch White Album

    I watched it when the furore surrounding the ending was just starting and it is a thoroughly disheartening series not simply for the ending but just the level of malevolence shown through the kids. It’s not particularly realistic but I found it useful to view the series as kind of the anti-harem: it deals with the emotions resulting from a guy basically doing what a lot of other shows hint at.

    Makoto didn’t force himself onto any of the girls and he does begin to show some remorse towards the end of the series but really, if you’re male, you have to ask yourself that if you had that many girls throwing themselves at you in high school, would you be any different?

    I watched the first episode months ago and it’s really uninteresting. But I put this shit on my on-hold list because I’m kinda intrigue on what’s going to happen on the ending.

    It’s on my waiting list and now that I heard what you said, I just want to see it even more! I love dark ending and twisted characters 🙂

    Now I actually want to watch this thing. I’m seeking for stuff going into all dephts of WTF and that anime seems to be just like that. Only thing I’m curious about is the title, shouldn’t it be a bit more alter then, LOL? It sounds like a simple, Friday afternoon chilling slice-of-life.

    No it’s actually a frikin frustrating series about a guy who cheats on every girl – he even has intercourse with side characters WTH

    @Spiral

    Yea… hate him. Always have hated seeing other guys double cross there own gf… But still, ugh, the ending is SOO disturbing.

    @Brian

    ummm, ok. I guess if two people say it, then I definitely won’t watch it… XD

    @Scamp

    Well, yea. Like this guy said, the show was so well concocted, so well planned, that it all made sence. But its such an evil show.

    @chaostangent

    YES, I noticed exactly what you said! And also the level of cruelty that EVEN THE SIDE CHARACTERS show is just so… ugh… I can barely stand it.

    Look, chaostangent, if there was ever one thing I could swear on my grave was my loyalty. I think it might have something to do with culture and the way you were raised, but loyalty to the one you love or the one you are now with is something EXTREMELY IMPORTANT in my people. If not kept, one will suffer the penalty. Not only that, but its not we’re afraid of the penalty, but I for example felt REALLY sorry for what Makoto did to those girls (Kotonoha & Sekai). No one has to believe me, but that’s just something I don’t mess with.

    @Kairu & @Canne & @Béla

    oh my… I’m tellin you all, this isn’t just some other shows with your twisted minded villans… This is a show that if you watch it at night(like I did) you’ll realize that what happened in this show could actually happen, and then you start gettin all freaked out at night.. *shivers seriously*

    Even though they said at every episode that everything is fake, I still want to ask “Who the F*** would be so morbid to create such a horrible show.”

    I’ve watched some pretty scary stuff. Trust me… from “Devils Rejects” to “Genocyber”… and trust me… this is some fucked up stuff…

    I mean seriously, this show is like completely different, so horribly different that I just don’t get it. It’s hard to believe that normal people came up with a story like this…

    @ myself…

    geeze… what a mistake I made…

  11. 17 December 2009 at 12:28 am

    @Canne: If that’s the case, then School Days is a good one for you.

    you think that this is creepy? OHHOHOHOHO DO NOT watch Higurashi don’t. It just gets worse in this show muchmuchmuchmuch worse.

  13. 17 December 2009 at 1:01 am

    I don`t like such anime series …….

    @Poro

    Wow… its hard to believe something can get worse then this. But don’t get me wrong. It’s not the gore and blood that freaked me out. Its like Chaosagent said, their level of malevolence is rediculously insane in such a way that its not, ‘enjoyable scary’, its more like, “WTF, I CAN”T STAND THIS ANYMORE!”

    @Momo1984

    Agreed. At least there’s one person in their right mind. XD

  15. 17 December 2009 at 4:27 am

    I can’t believe all the White Album hate on here. That show is one of the most unintentionally hilarious anime that I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Of course, if you can’t stand trashy soap operas, then it’s not for you, but I am going to be seriously bummed out when it’s over. Seriously.

    And I liked School Days. To answer your question, Sekai had to die because the situation was mostly her fault. Makoto just wanted to get laid, and he held true to that until the very end. That may not be nice or right, but it is what it is, and he was honest about it. Sekai screwed over a stranger and her best friend to get Makoto, when she could have just been upfront about her intentions. Sure there would have been disappointment and pain, but the jealous backstabbing and at least one mental breakdown would have been avoided… and without those things there would have been no killing. So, all her fault.

    Higurashi is awesome, but you really have to watch the first two seasons to get to a satisfying conclusion IMO.

    17 December 2009 at 6:17 am

    Nope. Sorry, F*** that… people like Makoto… ugh. Sekai did do something wrong, but at least she kept true to her feelings for ONE MAN, and didn’t have some stupid intentions like Makoto did. Sekai never would have giving into Makoto if he hadn’t started hitting on her. And she had also believed Makoto’s lie about telling Kotonoha it was over. So Sekai didn’t know he didn’t break it up. Of course, the only thing I can blame her for is for giving him “practice” like that. But even so, she never deserved what happened to her.

  17. 17 December 2009 at 6:32 am

    Makoto was an amoral jerk, but Sekai went after him knowing that Setsuna was in love with him the whole time. How right was that? And then she murdered the guy. She got what was coming to her.

    Please don’t make this a school days/higurashi/white album debate. Ugh. Fine! The 1st season of Higurashi was the sickest thing I’ve ever seen! happy? I left season 2 untouched. It was all Makoto man. It’s something called patriarchy. It exists in society today and since it does, males have to take responsibility whether the woman is wrong or not. I am not going to explain how and why laws are created that hurt males in a patriarchied world. Just saying that Makoto is the guy who ultimately decides if he sticks his stick into which girl or not.

  19. 17 December 2009 at 9:57 pm

    I said that White Album was unintentionally hilarious. I don’t know how anyone could watch it as a straight drama, even though the show is marketed that way, when the show goes out of its way to undermine itself and make its characters unlikable. The hilarity, for me and many others, ensues when something bad happens to the characters, or when they do something worthy of a firm /headdesk. So those things, and the fact that Touya sets the harem lead bar so low that crying for sex actually becomes a viable means of getting into a girl’s pants, make this a so-terrible-it’s-awesome must watch for me.
