12 moments in anime #2: Who cares about last year, 2010 FTW!

So I’ve spent the last 10 days looking back at how wonderful a year in anime is was for me and my glorious anime fandom. That’s lovely and everything, it’s always nice to look back at get all nostalgic over the times you’ve enjoyed. But you know me. There’s only so long I can spend reminiscing before I start to get itchy feet. Who cares what’s happened in the past? We’ve seen them already. I want to know what happens in the future. Bring on 2010!

I think I’ve mentioned Durarara before. I think we’ve all seen Durarara mentioned in some form or another on this blog, a different blog, all across anime fandom you’ve probably heard of Durarara. But I have a sneaking feeling that Sora no Woto might just be the sleeper hit of the upcoming season. A slice-of-life with a terrible war in the background, kinda reminiscent of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. There’s plenty coming up in the winter season and we’ve covered that well enough already so lets look even further forward to the glorious mecha-filled days of this Spring.

Yes, we finally have some decent mecha coming in the future. Interestingly, both are 6 episodes long, kinda similar to how the Kara no Kyokai movies ran. First there’s Break Blade, a joint project by Production IG and Xebec, except it’s taken the best parts of each studio and made 6 movies of this epic-looking mecha series. What’s the other series you ask? Gundam Unicorn. Fabulous name don’t you agree? 6 50 minute OVA episodes, one released per month, starting this spring. Yes, my mecha action loving buddies, the drought has finally ended and we are going to get some proper action next spring.

Not that much of a mecha fan? Absolutely no worries there whatsoever. Moe fans have Black Rock Shooter, which was considered a big enough deal to get the Haruhi/Kannagi director behind it. Key romance fans, you guys have Angel Beats. Shojo fans have Kaichou wa Maid-sama. Crazy Shaft comedy up your aisle? Arakawa under the Bridge looks fantastic. Shounen fans have Nurarihyon no Mago coming up soon. Elitists have the Kaiba director coming into the Noitamina timeslot to make Yojo-Han Shinwa Takei.

That’s only a tiny portion. There’s the Eden movie, Bakuman, Shakugan no Shana and Black Lagoon sequels, Haruhi, Gintama and Hetalia movies, a new Ghibli movie. The list goes on. There’s all this anime in the past I’ve yet to watch, all this anime coming up that I’m looking forward to watching and all my favourite anime left to re-watch. I’m never going to get tired of this stuff. Man, I love anime.
