Seitokai Yakuindomo first impressions

Immaturely funny.

First thing’s first – I promised myself not to blog more than two anime series this season but it looks like some series have made some unexpected good impressions on me… *cough cough* damn you AIC.  Blindability said in her comments “Spiral will let us know if it’s any good” in the season previews, I’m here to tell you that it’s pretty mixed. Of course, every anime is going to have diverging opinions but I found that Seitokai Yakuindomo is a really split anime.

Good point: Look at his hands.  He’s being a gentleman within the anime and does not want to get involved in some confusion thing where a girl gets felt up.  The girls don’t really realize what he’s doing yet he’s doing it anyway.  More than that, he is avoiding any unnecessary fanservice scene which saves precious minutes on a first episode that usually needs a good impression for people to follow.

Bad point: Some of the humor was lame.  This one scene in particular made me realize the stupidity of people trying to avoid the truthful answers when it’s actually nothing to be embarassed about.  Yes, I know she’s good at everything but it’d be nice not to waste time on admiting one’s flaws and trying to make a joke out of it by blaming something else.  It made me chuckle, don’t get me wrong, but it seriously wasted good airing time.

Good point: However, the first episode did have unexpected funny moments.  I thought we were in for some monologue about Suzu’s problem with being short but she just ends up punching our hero smack in the face while she’s asleep. It’s this original humor that makes a series stand out and that punched basically punched me back into enjoying the show.  Already in the first episode, we’re seeing good humor but we’re not even at the sex jokes yet…

Good point: The sexual inferences were pretty funny throughout the entire episode although it did establish the secretary as a… well, sex-hungry individual (and that’s a euphenism).  It established the setting as naive girls are getting used to the prescence of a male, and it’ll be interesing to see what other things they bring up other than bodily fluids, tampons, masochistic desires, and using porn DVDs to learn how to answer to interviews.  Although this is a good point about the episode… it was also its

Bad point: I have friends who go to all-girl schools (naturally, these friends are females) and they assure me that conversations like these never occur and the naiiveness of some of the female characters is ridiculous.  I’ll believe them, since I normally trust my friends.  Although… I do would like to try this experiment for myself *smack*.

Good point: Funny character, and funny scene in the middle explaining the H-scene.  Yes, that’s how they actually look like.

In the end, it’s not as plotless as Setokai no Ichizon and the characters are pretty unique in personalities and looks.  It’s one of those series you don’t really expect to be good but the first episode always end up pretty good.  I liked Setokai no Ichizon’s humor (hence, the epic display picture of Aka-chan) and it’s one of my more favorite mangas (anime wasn’t as good, but I always enjoyed the manga).  Congrats Seitokai Yakuindomo, you guys have survived the first round.

Just watched it, thought it was pretty good. Also I don’t think the fact that those types of conversations pretty much never really happen is a bad point, sticking to completely accurate and mundane conversations would just serve to make it boring.
