Kaichou wa Maid-sama! episode seventeen

I really don’t know what to expect from this anime anymore.  When will we finally get some plot?  Or is it always going to be a Misaki has a problem and Usui fixes it format?  Obviously the last several episodes are going to have this whole big issue and in the end, Misaki is going to finally confess that she loves Usui but I really don’t feel like waiting that long for a good episode.  If they are going to be good, that is.

I actually got pretty excited from the title “Usui is My Enemy Now!?” because I actually thought that it was starting from this episode that Usui would show some hostility towards Misaki and their whole relationship would start to fall apart.  Then I actually watched the whole thing and wasn’t surprised – everything was the same except for the intimate moment towards the end.

I was surprised that they were still continuing the summer vacation on the beach theme but I was determined not to let that get ahead of me after remembering the somewhat disappointing (not surprisingly) episode last time.  It starts off good as Misaki decides to help Aoi out with the volleyball tournament.  I actually thought that Usui would turn against Misaki after she refused to team with him, which would be pretty cool to see considering that they’re both super-humans in achieving things.  Naturally, I wasn’t surprised that Misaki learned to play volleyball in the span of a few hours before kicking ass in the beach volleyball tournament with Aoi.  I expect that she did all the work since Aoi is too short to really do anything but receive and set, and it was a good thing to see that Misaki actually did have a swim suit which totally contradicts last episode with her school swimsuit and not buying one since it was too expensive but I’m not complaining because she’s in an actual swimsuit.

Usui dominates with her partner just helping him out.  He serves, blocks, spikes, set, receives, and pwns perfectly as he easily dominates Misaki in the final set.  However, Misaki shouts out that she doesn’t want Usui to be her enemy which could just as easily be seen as a confession.  Usui smiles and does his whole play with words before Misaki finally throws herself at an outgoing ball.  She saves it but losses her momentum and crashes into net poles… well, she would’ve had Usui not been there.  After getting a whole bruise on his arm (which I LOLed at when he said “I’m fine”), we skip to a night walk on the beach with Misaki and Usui doing what they always do at the end of the episode, save for almost kissing each other.  Damn fireworks ruined the moment.  They should’ve just kissed through it and then it would actually be an episode that moved forward in the plot and relationship.

Seeing that they did not kiss each other, I couldn’t help thinking how helpful these last two summer episodes have been to the plot.  Neither of them really attract elements of the story but then again, I guess the last ten episodes didn’t really help much either.  Curious to see Aoi again in this episode although he/she was one of the more annoying characters, but at least Usui’s true reason was revealed at the end since he didn’t want creeps and stalkers to be taking photos of Misaki when she was crowned the princess of the tournament that night.  Good man, but what’s in store of the episode next time?  (I smell more Miyabigaoka… however you spell that.)

I’m disappointed that this series, which started off with energy and direction, has fallen into these episodes that suggest, but don’t go anywhere. The last really good episode was the one where Usui jumps off the roof. 😛
