You should be watching: Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls

This essentially acts as my ultimate return from my tired venture up into the North.  You see, I have been shipwreck for the past couple of weeks without any sort of internet and have been feeding off mice, lizards, and the occasional seagull.  Despite the stereotype of deserted islands having nobody, my deserted island was filled with people from the roaring 1950s and I was soon treated as a deity among the natives.  More on that later.

The new shows for this season are heavily disappointing.  Apart from three or four shows, I find that none of them are particularly worthwhile to watch.  Of course, my return post has to be nothing short than epic but first of all I’d like to thank blindability for keeping up the site while I was on my journey.  Poro and Loba also can take credit with their interesting Baneling and Iron Man post as well.  Anyways, first post will be on the show you should be watching other than Bakuman (if you’re not watching Bakuman, I can’t speak to you): Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls.

The Hero

So it takes place sometime in feudal Japan during the time of the different empires yet there are jet planes and blimps that are seen in the first episode.   Supposedly, a great shadow will fall over Japan and it’s up to our main hero: Muneakira Yagyu.  Muneakira is clearly a samurai with loyalty to the Tokugawa clan but has his own sense of pride, judgment, and feelings.  While appearing to be a normal person, he is actually someone very important to the plot.  Obviously, but a lot more important than you think – he is a Master Samurai General.  That means a lot more than you think, which I’ll explain a bit later.

Jubee Yagyu

So then of course comes the ditsy yet important main heroine that supposedly is going to save the day or more importantly, society and the world.  Jubee Yagyu is mysteriously introduced in episode one through a weird black bubble and is “unleashed” upon the world in her alter-ego form.  While as a normal girl she is stupid, silly, and amateur at sword-fighting, her altered form after kissing her Master Samurai General (guess who) is an incredible samurai with strength over 9000! Her bad-ass form still features the same voice actress which shows some prowess in Aoi Yuki’s talent to voice-act.

Sen Tokugawa

Sen Tokugawa turns out to be the princess of the Tokugawa Sect in the present Japan and a childhood friend of Muneakira.  While initially she seems to be a cruel and heartless bitch who toys with the emotions of her servants, she is really a funny and cunning little princess who has a crush on Muneakira.  She is one of my more favorite characters since the main heroine is actually a complete ditz.  She’s got a great rack and uh, she’s a really funny person.  You can tell how much effort she puts into spending time with Muneakira that she really cares about him.  Ahhh, young love.  I miss high school now, but then again if I was a samurai, things would be a bit different.  She uses a spear as her weapon, and judging by the opening she turns out to be a Master Samurai too.

Hattori Hanzo

Hattori Hanzo, ninja and right-hand servant to Sen Tokugawa, is vocied by Saori Goto who is known for her roles as Chitose in Galaxy Angels and Keiko in the Minami-ke trilogy (she’ll also play an important role in Steins;Gate – if you don’t know what that is, you suck because I’ve already written a post about that).  Hattori is obsessed with Sen and it shows in the opening and that one lesbian-like scene.  For me, that is a real turn-off in any character.  Not the lesbian factor, but how they’re obsessed with a single person enough to be licking their legs.  She seems to be a main character, but someone who doesn’t get enough attention within the series for anyone to particularly care about.

Yukimura Sanada and Matabee Goto

Whereas Hattori is obsessed with Sen, Matabee Goto’s relationship with Yukimura is much more realistic and relaxing.  A loyal servant to Yukimura (played by none other than Rie Kugimiya – if you don’t know who she is by now you should go die), Matabe (voiced by Yu Kobayashi) is a spear-woman bent on protecting her values and serving those who she cares for.  She seems to have something going with Jubee as Jubee likes to call her by her nickname, but she remains one of the more healthy side characters that always seems to be doing the right thing.  Judging by the beginning, it’s unclear whether she is a Master Samurai.  Yukimura, on the other hand, is a genius magician who turns out to be a Master Samurai with giant hurricane fans (I’d like to know what the Hurricane Kiss is).  She is the…. well, Rie Kugimiya always plays these roles as the tsundere.  Nothing particularly new but always interesting.

The Situation

Basically, Muneakira kissed Jubee and since she turned into a Master Samurai, everyone begins to judge something is wrong with Jubee.  Obviously, she doesn’t know who she is yet she turns into an all-powerful force after kissing her General.  However recently, a new theory has come that it’s not Jubee but rather any GIRL that kisses Muneakira that will transform in a Master Samurai.  After spending the latest episode on Yukimura’s plots to try to kiss Muneakira, she finally does in the end and is transformed into hurricane-fan tsundere, which aptly demonstrates that Muneakira is boss.  And every girl that kisses him will be under his command as Master Samurai.  But it’s still pretty obvious that Jubee is the strongest in her master samurai form.  There also seems to be that effect that the girl losses her clothes after transforming back, but no biggie.  This episode will be blogged about weekly now.

“if you’re not watching Bakuman, I can’t speak to you”

If you’ve actually read the manga, and are still watching Bakuman, i’m perfectly content with you not speaking to me.

A good post on the series.

Some good thoughts on Sen. Right now she’s just pushed me a bit far with the constant jealousy she is suffering from. I mean if it looked like she planned on doing something that’d be fine, but she seems content to be a bad mood and go after the other girls instead of Muneakira.

Curious where they are going to go with Muneakira since he started with a great impression but has fallen a bit. Needs to get into a fight since with girls he’s just a nervous harem lead.

Maybe, but hopefully we’ll get some good group fighting scenes after they waste 4 more episodes on getting every girl to become a master samurai.
