Infinite Stratos episode 4

Begins with the match between Ichika and Ririn. But during the match, a mysterious villain emerges!

The episode jumps right into the inter-class fight between Ichika and Ririn. Ririn gains the upper hand with her Impulse Cannon weapon, and Ichika has to use the Ignition Boost, a special move taught to him by Chifuyu.

Before he hits, an explosion rocks the arena and Yamada reports that the shield around the arena has been broken through. Chifuyu immediately orders the cancellation of the match and the evacuation of Ichika and Ririn, as a hostile black IS emerges from the smoke.

Yamada reveals that evacuation won’t be so easy after all, as the hostile IS has hacked into and activated the arena gate shields, blocking Ririn and Ichika’s evacuation and blocking any relief from getting to them. The two of them decide to team up and fight the IS.

Houki comes out to the arena to provide some moral support, and conveniently distracts the hostile. Ichika instructs Ririn to fire at his own IS at full power, and somehow the Byakushiki absorbs the energy of the blast, refilling its shield energy. Ichika then charges the hostile, taking an arm off but also taking a strong hit. Ichika is about to be dispatched, when Cecilia comes to save the day!

The students celebrate too early, as the enemy IS is not yet done with. Ichika is forced to charge it through its fire…

and the scene shifts to a sleeping Ichika in a hospital bed, where Ririn tries to sneak a kiss from him. It seems that Ichika’s charge succeeded, and he was the only one who got hurt. The conversation quickly shifts to the promise between the two, with Ichika asking if it had any meaning other than free food, and Ririn dismissing it. Ichika offers to ‘have some fun’ someday with Rin (>:D)  who takes it as a date. Her response is cut short by Cecilia and Houki entering the room, and hostilities between the three resume.

The episode ends on a slightly dark note, as the teachers Yamada and Chifuyu examine the hostile IS, coming to the conclusion that it has an ‘unregistered core’ outside of the supposed only 467 – dun dun dun…

I loved this episode. The startling entrance of the hostile IS quite surprised me, and really broke with what I thought this episode would be. Coupled with the amazing fighting animation, I enjoyed every minute. Just as good was the promise of more action in the future – the foreshadowing at the end of the episode pointed to the emergence of a villain and a (sub)plot focused on action.

Even though the episode was focused on action and lasers, there were some good romantic moments, chiefly Ichika’s hospital bed conversation with Ririn. Her revealing that her family divorced and that she lost the restaurant special to her and Ichika was touching, and Ichika’s cheering her up by offering to go have fun some day improved my image of him. And Ririn’s foiled attempt to kiss Ichika as he slept was just cute. ❤

I always find it weird when an anime girl tries to sneak a kiss. They seem to have no restraint at all when it comes to their promiscuity; unless they’re of tsundere tendencies of course.

He’s sleeping! I WANT TO KISS HIM AND HUG HIM AND FONDL… be sure of our mutual love for each other by raping his lips. Common sense in my anime does not exist most of the time.

Perhaps you could explain it off as Ririn trying to gain an ‘advantage’ over her numerous competition. Common sense in anime is a rarity for sure, though I didn’t mind this instance since it was so adorable.
