First Impressions: Ro-Kyu-Bu!

With this being the only sport themed anime this season I may as well give it a watch who knows when the next proper sports anime will come out… I’m looking at you MADHOUSE, enough with this MARVEL bull, I want more Hajime no Ippo! Anyway, roll on the Loli.

Ro-Kyu-Bu Maids

Oh in my season preview comment I said this was like the NBA under-13 division, my mistake, its the under-10’s at best.

The show actually started pretty well, the girls were taking on the boys in a practice game and they had a slow motion moment and everything, was pretty graceful. Then they brought out the maid outfits which wasn’t even bad I could even deal with the insistent cries of onii-chan/master, what broke the camels back was the shower scene, yes a 10-year old shower. Even more so, Im told there is an uncensored version! (how did this sneak past Ishihara?)

That aside, it does seem like a decent sports anime. This episode largely focussed on introducing the squad and we got to meet all 5 girls as well as what their individual strengths & weaknesses of which Tomoka is clearly the best. As a sports enthusiast, I found it pretty cool that they bothered to show how they trained especially since it was all basketball basics. Have to admit though, I got a small feeling of nostalgia watching them train as I can remember doing those same drills. Except when practice was over we never had to clean the floors afterwards.

In the middle of the episode we got to see how everyone is when they go home, once again focussing on all the girls. The girls are clearly close friends shown by hw they go on with each other while they’re chatting online, Subaru on the other hand goes home to his sister who is a bit of a freak, no sexual antics yet but its a fair wager that it will end there soon enough. Here we learn that it is his sister who got him the coaching gig as she is a teacher at the school. And in hushed tones they speak of how Subaru’s own basketball club was disband owing to some ‘controversial’ circumstances.

It turned out to be much more sports orientated than i expected which was an awesome surprise. I liked that they put a spotlight on each team member and didn’t focus on just Tomoka, hopefully this continues. Also, I hope the off-field stuff (i.e. Subaru’s crazy sister or his high school stuff) doesn’t detract too much from the basketball but I doubt it. Hopefully they will at least get to play in some tournament of sorts.

And shout out to Doki fansubs for including TL notes, they’re much appreciated and thanks to thatI actually got that ‘born in April’ joke. Good job.

Verdict (Will I blog this?):

I won’t do this episodically as I think there are better anime this season, but hopefully it will keep me interested enough to come back and do a review post on it.

I was surprised that the basketball shown in the OP looked as good as it did. What a shame that they insist on inserting tasteless fan service, instead of making a solid sports anime.

^ Yup, although given the lack of sports anime, I’ll take a 40-60 (sport-fanservice) split for the rest of the series as a win.

I’m looking at previous seasons and I’m seeing that the sports genre is practically dead in anime. It seems that the main requirement for most sport anime to get broadcasted these days is to have cute girls or fan service. It’s just sad…
