Most of the team has been busy this last season so we’ve been even slower than usual in getting our preview out. But time still ticks on and the summer season is upon us with finale episodes for Spring airing this past week so lets get on with things, what can we look forward to this summer (or winter for myself & Gooney).
In this day and age of the internet, season previews are losing their appeal and usefulness especially when you have certain dedicated individuals making extremely convenient season preview charts like these.
But for those that came here looking for our opinions on the season on what we think will be hot and will not or are planning on taking bets on how wrong we are, read on. For everyone else you can bugger off or check out these much better season previews: Metanorn, The Cart Driver, Crazy Cake and others.
Now if you’ve been watching anime for any period of time, you’ve probably come to accept that the summer anime season is not going to be the best season of the year. But this year it’s particularly horrific. Ok, maybe horrific is a bit harsh, there’s not much Moe so thats a good thing but otherwise it’s an endless sea of mediocrity… here’s hoping that we’re wrong.
We’d recommend
Starting off with the famed noitaminA timeslot we welcome the return of Moyashimon Returns a sequel to the original Moyashimon which also debuted as a noitaminA show. Although all of us may not have watched the first season we all agree that it shouldn’t disappoint. Same for the other noitaminA show; Natsuyuki Rendezvous which features a blind protaginist taking on ghosts or atleast thats what I got from the synopsis as the PV was useless. Some of the studio’s really need to get better people working on these PV’s!
One of the shows building some hype online is ironically Sword Art Online an anime about a game, a deadly game, involving swords. Being slightly more objective, Gooney is hoping that its more .Hack than Accel World while ThaivuN & myself pretty much made up our minds after seeing this image, which some could argue is being very objective. It should also be noted that Poro has said “he’d be all over this shit” if you needed anymore stamps of approval. I’m most interested by Tari Tari, P.A. Works new show as I’ve loved their recent stuff and if it sucks atleast the music should still be good while Gooney has put all his chips on Jinrui Wa Suitai Shimashita because he likes fairies.
Sequels, Sequels, Sequels…
Possibly the biggest reason this summer is going to suck is because of the number of sequels this season, not much new stuff happening to be honest. It’s understandable if its a two-cour show or if the previous season was a season ago (Rinne no Lagrange) as that’s sort of normal but there is this new trend of splitting season’s apart and completing them a season or 2 later, Fate/Zero has set a bad precedent in my opinion.
Dog Days returns and we unanimously agreed that it will just be more bollocks whiles Yuru Yuri 2 kind of divided us, I myself am indiferent but have to boycott it on principle as they’ve gone and made those two music symbols part of the official title, urgh. And ThaivuN has tried his best to convince us that Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon was not bad and neither will Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon 2 be, he did try.
Straight outa left field
This is my favorite category, made up of shows we’d like to be good but most likely won’t be. Our dark horses for the season if you like.
We’ve already mentioned that this season is pretty light on the moe but we still have good old ecchi in the shape of Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai which is a show in the same mold of High School DxD. I also voted on Muv-Luv Alternate: Total Eclipse not because it looks to have a sizable amount of fanservice but because its our only offering of mecha for the season and it actually looks decent in that respect, nobody else really agrees with me though. We do agree though that Binbou-gami Ga! will be that anime which is undoubtedly reatarded but we all still watch, we love crazy women.
I oh so want Aruvu Rezuru: Kikai Jikake no Yousei-tachi to be good as it deals with the awesome concept of uploading your conscience into cyberspace and having stuff go wrong but ZEXCS are doing it, fingers crossed. Hagure Yuusha no Estetica also falls into this precarious category of having a dodgy studio (ARMS) attached however this one also involves a high school and satan’s daughter so it’s almost definately gona be sh!t. Kokoro Connect on the otherhand looks extremely bland (re: crappy trailers) but the synopsis does mention body/gender switching which is always fun so it should atleast be worth the 3 episode treatment.
Avoid like the plague
Thankfully there’s not much to go here as most of the shows this season is mediocre but not terribad however Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate (more school club drivel) has a good chance of ending up here as does Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imouto ga Iru! (Incest) and Campione which Poro predicts being less enjoyable than unclogging his sink.
So yeah… no sport 😥 I mean looking foward to Fall 2012 😀
Agreed as usual it’s not looking like an amazing summer season. Some decent shows and probably a few surprises, but not spectacular.
Does seem like my only “must see” is Sword Art Online. Agree that I’d hope for more .hack than Accel World. The setting does seem to connect pretty well to that first comparison. Just seems like there will be a great chance for some tension and good story.
Certainly some shows I’m going to check out, but really will have to see what turns out to be good. Does feel pretty weak though with sequels and not much new coming out. Well long as this season can give enough in order to hang on until Fall I’ll survive :).
Holy hell! Thats the fastest reply to one of my posts ever!
Yup, its definatley a good time to catch up on that backlog especially since I pretty much missed out on Spring. 🙂
Horizon (I find this anime really good) and that Imouto anime are the only things I need to survive the rest of my summer vacation. LOL
