Hetalia Axis Powers episode 35 + Hetalia feature length movie?

Yes, a feature length movie about Hetalia. I really don’t know what to say. I certainly don’t have enough space to talk about it as my opening paragraph so I guess I’ll tackle that issue (plus I had already typed out most of this post before I heard about the news and I’m not changing it now). So for now I’ll focus on the awesome episode at hand.

vlcsnap-2009-09-23-15h10m49s182

vlcsnap-2009-09-23-15h09m26s130

Err...who are you?

This episode was split into two gags, which as you can all see worked far better than the mountain of unrelated gags that was the approach the last episode decided to take. First up was…errr, I’ve forgotten his name. No really, when he first made his dramatic appearance to the G8 summit, I’d totally forgotten which country he was. My first thought was actually that he was one of the Baltic countries, possibly Estonia. Yes, I remember a country that’s a measly 45,000 square kilometres in area (hurrah for Wikipedia) before I recall that there’s this fucking massive country sitting on top of America. The thing is, Canada really doesn’t make any impact on world politics. I was talking to some Canadian students this week (no, I did not deliberately seek out some Canadians for my Hetalia posts. I’m dedicated to blogging but not quite to that extent. They just happened to show up and history just happenned to come up in conversation) and they were saying that Canadian history is pretty limited and they mainly focus on British history, with the occasional bit of French.

Hey, Greece stole Sealand's hat!

Hey, Greece stole Sealand's hat!

But let’s get onto the part of the episode that I really want to talk about. There comes a time in a comedy that one single joke can leave you in a heap, incapable of breathing with tears streaming down your face. This particular bit of dialogue between Greece and France was one such time. It certainly didn’t help that I have a cold so the laughs came out less as hearty guffaws and sounded more like a warthog being raped. The slightly abridged version of the dialogue goes like this.

Greece: In ancient times, people played sports in the Olympic Games

France: You know Greece, I’m not really into sports

Greece: In those days the men played the sport completely naked

France: You serious! Man that’s awesome, we should so restart these Olympics!

 vlcsnap-2009-09-23-15h11m20s249

As with everything in Hetalia, it’s slightly grounded in historic fact. The fellow who restarted the Olympics was indeed a Frenchman, Pierre de Coubertin, and he did indeed get inspired by the excavated Greek ruins. Unfortunately, Wikipedia said nothing about the man enjoying the sight of hundreds of naked men making horrible and painful mistakes during the relay races, which would’ve made the entire scenario even funnier, if that was even possible. The man had a pretty famous quote to his name. I’d heard it before but I never realised he was the one who said it.

The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well

Which loosely translates as

It’s not about winning, it’s about taking part

Which means that Pierre de Coubertin was also the world’s first sports pussy. Ah I kid, sometimes I wish the rest of the world would take that line a bit more to heart. Would stop all the bloody drug-taking that goes on in the Olympics at the moment. Pierre must be turning in his grave at the sight of them.

Lulz, Cuba. He has a pretty badass voice doesn't he

Lulz, Cuba. He has a pretty badass voice doesn't he

And Hetalia continues to impress. If anyone here is also watching the new FMA (and you should be) then you will know what I mean when I say these two are similar. The first part of the anime was rather lacking, but have really picked up for the past two months. I still consider the first season of FMA better than this new one but with every passing episode the gap is getting smaller. With Hetalia, I didn’t consider it a great comedy but with every passing episode since 26 it’s been fantastic. I even went so far as to raise it’s score on MAL from a 7 to an 8 (I’m a harsh marker so 8 is a very good score). Long may it continue, right into this upcoming movie.

vlcsnap-2009-09-23-15h08m51s39

Yeah, the movie. I really don’t know what to make of that news. If you think about it for a second, Hetalia has been an absolute hit for Studio Deen. Hetalia has been selling incredibly well and they are also making a chunk of money off random other merchandise like character CD’s and pasta sauce with the face of Italy plastered on the label. The natural course of events a studio would take would be to earn even more money. In that sense a movie would make sense. But this is Hetalia. Bloody Hetalia guys! What on earth are they going to do with an hour long movie? I’ve heard there are longer strips in the manga but does anyone seriously think that those strips will cover a feature length movie? In a full length movie you could include the entire history since the Romans in Hetalia style. Well, there will be more news on the subject on 30th September so keep your eyes glued for any more info on this truly bizarre announcement.

vlcsnap-2009-09-23-15h12m02s159

And now for something totally off topic. Would anyone like to join me in a game of Fantasy Anime League? It’s a club on MAL that works slightly like those fantasy football leagues you see occasionally. I would’ve made a separate post to ask people but I would’ve been mortally embarrassed if nobody replied so sticking it in a Hetalia post is the logical option I suppose. Basically, you just join the club and follow their instructions to pick your team. When you’ve picked your team, leave me a comment with your MAL username and I’ll set up a mini league between us. I’ve only played the game once so don’t worry, you could get beginners luck. Anywho, I hope you do join me and enjoy your weekend!

    2: YES, CUBA!! I wonder if we’ll get angry Cubans threatning the studios with cigars and communism =3=

    3: I’m not surprised you didnt watch it, at the beginningm, Russia’s one line, for the entire episode, is “It’s not China kolkol”

    YEAH, THAT’S RIGHT BITCHES, RUSSIA JUST KOLKOLKOL’D FOR THE FIRST TIME, AWRITE!!

    4: Fig leaves. What is that. WHAT IS THAT?! IT’S NOT A FIG LEAVE, IT’S ROSES. FRANCIS BONNEFOY USES CROTCH ROSES!!!

    http://aph.starry-sky.com/orn.html

    England is alot more Pussy in the strip… You get that Frog baby!

    5: A movie eh? I WANT TO GO TO JAPAN AND GET PASTA SAUSE WITH ITALY ON IT RAAAAAAAAAGE. Of course, it better be damn good pasta sausage, but judging by how randomly German I’ve become(Went to a biergarten, had a wurst and potato pancakes and kicked ass with a rifle) chances are I’m not going back to my Italiano roots for a looooong time =3=

    Man… That wurst was delicious…

  2. 24 September 2009 at 10:43 pm

    Wow, a full movie? I guess they could cover one period on history so that the gags have a semblance of organization and flow. Looking forward to it.

    I’m in for the FAL, already picked out my team. My username there is the same as here and on THAT, so I’ll see you on MAL.

    Maybe they’ll animate the Boun San Valentino Strips… OR FRANCE’S CHRISTMAS RAMPAGE!!

  4. 25 September 2009 at 2:08 am

    Well, long-time reader, first time commenter. (Wow, I sound dorky.) Tried to comment before but somehow it didn’t post the whole long thing and… I was too lazy to retype everything.

    Well, first off I’d like to say that I look forward to your blogs almost as much as the actual episode every week. I check the animate website ahead of time to check what episode it’ll be and wonder how you’ll respond to it. If you’ll like it and such. In short… I really love your blog. (And yes, I read your other entries too besides Hetalia.)

    As for the movie, I hear that a theatrical movie in Japan isn’t necesarily the same. We might end up with a 20 minute to 30 minute movie considering the length of the actual episodes. (Though as a fan I’m hoping for something a bit longer…)

    Anyway, I love your blogs and can’t wait to read more! ^ ^

    @ LuffyLuffy:

    Yes, France stole all canada’s episode!
    OH CANADAAAA OH CANADAAAA

    …why do you let people walk all over you? Plz. JOIN ME IN MOVING TO CANADA AND INCREASING CANADIAN POPULARITY!!! And yes, the kolko. THE KOLKO.

    Now I also really want to go to Japan and buy pasta sauce with Italy on it! Yay! I’ve been looking everywhere for an english version of the hetalia book, but I can’t for thel ife of me find one! If anyone knows a website/anything where I can get my hands on a copy, do tell!

  6. 25 September 2009 at 4:43 pm

    @luffyluffy

    France >> Canada. I love France actually, I wish he showed up more. I thouht the fig leaves were rather fitting seeing as he was talking about the Olympics. All those naked statues of the olympics had fig leaves stuck on some time in the 1600ish’s.

    @ExecutiveOtaku

    Unfortunatly it seems nobody else is interested in playing…ah well, it’ll be fun reguardless.

    @Siri

    “long-time reader, first time commenter” wow, I feel like Answerman! It’s always great to get more commenters so long may it continue.

    Yeah, feature length is a bit of a misleading phrase. They said that about Cencoroll and that’s only a half hour long. I guess a half hour movie could work with Hetalia, providing they don’t try to keep a serious face on the whole time, that never works.

    (Crap, now that you mention it, I hope the Eden movies are of proper length aswell)

    @KSFWolfe

    Hetalia has yet to be liscenced yet in it’s manga or anime form. I’d say it’s an inevitable choice to be liscenced because it sells very well and has a rather devoted fanbase. So you will get to see an english version eventually.

    Like Siri I am also a long time reader, first commenter. I find all of your blogs are interesting to read, Hetalia or not.

    If it is a half an hour feature, then if its probably not teh April Fools strips it’ll be the Buon San Valentino Strips Like luffyluffy said.

    Don’t know if you know but Cuba is voiced by Hiroki Takahashi, a.k.a. Japan.

    I’m going to try and keep this short so I don’t scare away people who are going to post, lol.

    Wow, a movie? I’ll be interested to see how that comes out! XD

    Aww…Canada’s so cute! He’s so distressed, lol. It’s funny to hear him yell, because he’s so soft, haha. And I thought Cuba and Canada were “friends” in the webcomic…maybe not, considering that Cuba still seemed angry.

    HOLEY SHIT I WANT PASTA SAUCE WITH ITALY’S FACE ON ITTTT!!!!!! Veee~

    And Russia KOLKOL-ed!!! yay!!! (coughwejustneedawaterpipenowcough)

    That would be awesome if they came out with an English version… ^ ^

    I thought the valentine strip was really funy but it definitely suggest yaoi, haha. Well…more of a trying-too-hard Germany and a confused Italy, lol.

    Holey fruckity shit! China and Russia’s Maru Kaite Chikyuu’s are out!

    I forgot to mention in my last post that I was wondering about France’s roses/fig leaves as well…oh well…he’s still fricken funny! XP

  10. 26 September 2009 at 11:33 am

    Well, Siri has broken it open for all of us. 🙂 I’m also a long-time reader, first-time commenter. I’ve been enjoying your blog, particularly your Hetalia recap posts. And I also loved this episode!

    I love that Canada even screams QUIETLY. 😉 He’s such a hysterical contrast to America (and voiced by America’s voice actor, which just makes it even better =D). The way he cries “Maple!” to Cuba, as if the words “I’m not America, I’m Canada” are beyond him at the moment so all he can say is “Maple!”

    And naked Furan-su is always a good thing. 😉

    I can’t wait for the movie. It’ll probably be a compilation of some of the longer strips, plus a few of the bonus strips scattered in-between the longer stories.

    As to FMA, I wrote a post on my blog comparing the original FMA series with Brotherhood. I still prefer the original series, although I agree with you that Brotherhood is definitely getting better as it goes along (I’m currently on ep 19).

  11. 11 Humanity_Cat
    26 September 2009 at 12:44 pm

    Haha, I forgot that America and Canada shared the same voice actor. 🙂

    You know, I never realized how many fans Hetalia has until I searched deviantArt for a blank MeMe and a completed Hetalia MeMe was on the first page….first page…out of over 100,000 MeMe s…..I am in awe.

    But that probably doesn’t make sense to anyone unless you habitat on deviantArt…but you should get the idea I’m trying to get across…hopefully.

    Holy moley sajkhfddkjfkdfhkj etc.!!! I just listened to them too!

    Just 4 words:

    RUSSIA’S EVOL DEEP VOICE.

  13. 27 September 2009 at 2:32 am

    @Sieren

    Hurrah, more commenters. That’s always cool. To be brutally honest, most VA’s names fly straight over my head. I do recognise when I’ve heard a voice before but I usually don’t pay a whole lot of attention to them.

    @Humanity_Cat

    Well I got loads of first time commenters today so you can go back to your super-long comments from now on. There’s actually loads of Hetalia merchandise, they have pasta sauce of several flavours for each Hetalia character. They even reported it on ANN once.

    @Jan Suzukawa

    More commenters, hurrah! I loved that shot where there was all dramatic lines and camera movement but all Canada could muster was barely louder than a whisper. Have you watched episode 19 yet? That’s exactly the point from which the new series picks up dramatically, especially with Mustangs epic ‘I SEALED IT WITH FIRE’ line.

    Quick reccomendation for your blog: Get yourself on Animenano. All you need is to write about anime-related matters, have a minimum of 10 posts and be writing for at least a month. If you do, you’re hits should shoot up.

    I know, right?! Was it just me or towards the last fourth of the song, did he give a drunk hic-up? Haha.

    ~Scamp

    I only post super long boring comments if I get into something, but I’ll still try and keep the comment size down…haha.

    I actually just recently saw a picture of some of the Italy Pasta Sauce, lol.

    uhmm.. hello.. long time reader, first time commenter too. >__<

    Since i've been reading a lot of first time posters here, might as well join in too.

    I have to agree that Hetalia is getting really really good from 26 onwards. I enjoyed the first season, but i'm enjoying the second even more. xDDD

    I can't get past Russia's kolkolkol moment~! That was his first kolkol line in the anime right? Oh, Russia~ <3. Oh, and China's artstyle~! China aru~ <3.

    Oh yeah, France's rose! The fig still looks funny, but i like the rose crotch more. xDDD It looks funnier and soooo France.

    I must say, i have learned a lot of historical stuff from Hetalia. It even gives me more motivation to learn other cultures and countries. Thus, i really look forward to your hetalia blog posts as well, because you sometimes explain the historical side of an episode. :3

    Woah, a movie! Well, i can't really imagine a Hetalia movie (that's quite long for Hetalia, imo xD). But anything Hetalia is <3, so i'll be looking forward to that. Hopefully, Himaruya will introduce more countries. :3

    Sorry for teh looooong post. 😦

  18. 18 Humanity_Cat
    27 September 2009 at 11:34 pm

    I believe it was his first kolkolkol….*fanetic sigh* Well I think all of us Hetalia fans who’ve read the comic stips are used to the rose…lol.

    More countries like new new? Or more countries like ones they haven’t done in the anime yet? Either way is fine with me, haha. I’d really like to see something with Russia, Belarus, and Ukrain…(I feel like I spelled that wrong…-__-) it’d be interesting to see Russia trying to hide from his crazy knife wielding sister….o.O

    @ Scamp

    Hey I heard you want some epic MADS.Here’s one:

    It has all, and I mean ALL the countries. Even the Africa ones! Even the ones that were just background filling and only appeared once!
    Even the genderbender versions!
    Srsly…

    @Humanity_Cat

    Ukraine (with an e at the end). There ya go, it’s always an educational experience here at Bokutachi no Blog! Oh, and I’ve obviously missed the ‘kol kol kol’ laugh. I guess I wasn’t looking out for it.

    @blissfullynaive

    Wooh, even more first time commenters. I really do feel like Answerman here. Anywho, my problem with the prospect of a movie is that Hetalia usually fails at being serious and a movie would almost certainly take at least a semi-serious approach. That’s why I’m wary of it. I’m hoping they prove me wrong though.

    AS for the historical side of things, I’ve learned absolutely mountains from just googling shit that happens in the episode. Not just history related matters but other random pieces of info such as who started the Olypics and so forth. I spend more time looking up info on the latest episode then I do actually watching the series.

    @heyheyho

    That…was amazing. I mean wow, these Japanese have so much bloody time of their hands. That made me seriously want that new season of Black Lagoon that’s been rumoured to be coming for ages. You know what, that MAD is so awesome I think it deserves a place in the next Hetalia post.

  21. 21 Humanity_Cat
    28 September 2009 at 12:52 pm

    Augh! So now I can spell Liechtenstein right and not Ukraine?!

    And damn, that was really good…I’m pretty sure the name/all of it had to do with some anime that I’m not familiar with (psh, figures), but that was pretty damn good. o.O

    30 September 2009 at 10:36 pm

    Woah.. well, i guess i have to say thank you for the time you devote in searching the historical background for each episode. xD

    Yeah, i google some stuff i don’t get from an episode too. But i get a lot of info from reading Hetalia blog posts, most of the time. xD

    @heyho: WOAH!! WOAH WOAH WOAH!! That was.. beautiful. I cried. ;__; I got goosebumps when the video started (way past the credits). And i haven’t even watched Black Lagoon! LOL. OTL

    More epic hetalia video, pls. :3

    I watched the original vid of that MAD vid and it was really nice. However, the ending shocked me. I flinched. ;__; That was sad.

    Haha! Poor Canada!
    You know, Canada was a lot more invovled in the War then people thought, and we were usually the first ones to rush into battle (as America and England used us as a shield XD)
    Also, most people have forgotten about the war we fought with America, and won as well XD
    I hope that war gets into the anime… it would be funny to see timid Canada kick America’s butt.
