B Gata H Kei episode 2

It seems so short since last week’s stuff came out with the first episodes and all but I guess that’s what the schedule given me… brilliant.  Onto a more serious issue of watching this show – it doesn’t seem as bad as many of us thought it would be.  Yes, she is still constantly trying to lose her virginity to this one boy but it’s really sad how miserable her attempts are and the guy’s responses to them.

Seriously, this girl’s sex drive is insatiable. At the pool – sex.  On the slide – sex.  At home – sex.  At a guy’s room – sex.  Just when you think she couldn’t get more shallow, she actually does reconsider how she’s treating the guy, although she is a little over-emotional.  Seems like she’s really not a great character, but certainly better than some of the ones in other fan-service shows.  What really bugs me is her intelligence – she wants 100 sex friends yet has never had a boyfriend and cannot stand the appendixes of the male anatomy.  Ten bucks says that there’s going to be an episode where she ends up failing a test, needs to take a retake to pass a class, asks the guy to help her study, realizes something epiphanal about the guy, ends up taking the test, and ends up barely passing.  What did I just say about shallow plots..?

Onto the episode itself, it seems as if each episode will have two stories each time, which means that we have less time for each storyline.  Each 10-12 minutes is going to be dedicated for one attempt at our heroine’s attempts to get laid.  The pool story was somewhat decent (not really, no) but it certainly was better than the second part, dealing with the childhood friend.  The artwork is the same flashly animation as it was and will always be but I’m not really concerned about that right now.  What I’m worried about is the rest of the episodes in this show.  Will they all just be two stories each about Yamada’s attempts at having a sex friend, or will they actually incorporate a decent conflict and plot?  I’m expecting just a fun-series with nothing dark nor conflicting… ‘cept for Yamada’s sex-ego, of course.

Well on the positive at least telling more than one story should keep the pace moving pretty quickly. But yeah it’s not as bad as I was expecting. I think the most we’ll get in terms of depth is Yamada going for her sex plans and slowly building her relationship to Kosuda. Eventually getting to the point that she just wants him. Have already seen it building up in the first two episodes.

Though anyways talk about a flawed lead. At times she really does seem more like a villain than the heroine. Sex obsessed, possessive/stalker, jealous, and intended on bullying the childhood friend to make her clear out. Part of her character really is the clash between what she thinks and what actually happens. She is after the 100 partners, but is nervous quite often and was downright scared off last episode. In this one she tries to get the childhood friend to back off, but instead ends up giving her encouragement.

Not a bad show. Will get some comedy, some romance, and condom songs!

But she’s already asked him to help her study math, as an excuse to get into his pants.. I mean house (no, I mean pants.. or maybe not?).

I get the feeling that having bad characters is all just a cheap, but possibly workable, way to show character growth.. start with the bottom of the barrel, so the only way to go is up. I get the impression that the anime is screwing around with the guy’s character way too much. He almost seemed fairly sharp compared to the average male lead in these shows, but this episode seemed to make him dumb as a soap dish.

Still, I’m enjoying B Gata a lot more than I expected, even if it won’t win any awards.

What’s ironic, I saw some very deep blog posts about the supposedly shallow character.
