Hetalia Axis Powers episode 39

I believe some people have already predicted my reaction to the start of this episode. That opening sequence that left me in fear, dazed and frightened, huddled in a corner, desperately trying to shoo away the atrocious beings that had just appeared upon my monitor. I had seen these creatures before, long ago before anyone actually read my posts, and I never wanted to see them again. Yet, in my heart, I knew that one day they would return to haunt my Hetalia viewings. And it was in this episode, episode 39, that they finally reappeared…

Apart from that, this episode was pretty good. It went back to the unusual relationship that exists between England and America. For once, Hetalia was able to combine cuteness (chibi America, how could you not d’awww) and hilarity in the one strip. See, it wasn’t that hard was it. My favourite part of the episode by far was when America agreed to be his brother, England had little visions of all those people who had rejected his invitation as a brother. You know what, I think I need a picture to go through this.

vlcsnap-2009-10-22-21h05m05s223

I’m afraid I don’t know who the bottom right or top left is but all the other three made me lol. France, who England secretly really wants to be friends with. Scotland, whose character design was the second biggest win of the episode (biggest win was Netherlands being portrayed as a giant monster. Imagine being Dutch and waiting all this time for your character to appear and then all you get is a shady outline of a monster). I love the image of Scotland being a constant annoyance to England. Mark my words, Scotland will be a separate country from Britain before I die, providing I live as long as I plan to. And to top it all off, we got an appearance from Henry VIII. Now I know I like to explain the historical context behind jokes but if I was to start explaining Mr.Henry I’d be here all day. He’s one of my favourite historical figures (by favourite I mean ‘guy I like to make fun off’)

vlcsnap-2009-10-22-21h04m27s99

There is a rumour going around that Koreans have kicked up a ruckus again and got the Hetalia movie cancelled. First of all, I seriously doubt this is true…but think about it for a second. When they tried to get Hetalia on TV, the Koreans kicked up a ruckus even though Korea itself wasn’t going to be in the anime. They then quieted down when it’s tv airing was cancelled and turned into a webcast. However if they really plan to have a theatrical release of the movie, won’t the same people kick up a ruckus again? If it’s a straight-to-dvd release then obviously they won’t. Hetalia has been doing really well in terms of dvd sales. However if it’s shown in the cinema then…ok look, I seriously doubt they will and if they do, I believe Deen have enough power and support behind this series that it won’t get cancelled…again.
There you go Dutch people. There's your country in all it's glory

There you go Dutch people. There's your country in all it's glory

I wonder what Holland really looks like? If I was designing him, he would be a tall, constantly stoned guy who loves riding his bicycle while wearing his clogs. Oh, and he would have an Edward Elric-style ponytail. Heh, this is kind of fun. Time to turn the question on you people. If you were designing a Hetalia-sed version of a country that hasn’t appeared yet, what would your character be like. Don’t worry about too much about being politically correct. We are on episode 39 of Hetalia. Anyone who’s offended by that sort of stuff probably isn’t watching anymore.

You were late on this post XD

Anyways, *was preparing for your reaction and is standing by with a shocky thingys* don’t worry, I almost turned away when I first viewed the episode. Maybe the chibitalia crowds were getting restless or something so they threw it in the beginning. Pffft.

Bahh, I’d wish that the Korean shit wasn’t going on, but I doubt that it is a bluff (watch me take back my words when the rumor is proved false)…….What’s their problem? ~otherthankoreaisabreastgropingpervert~ I mean, he could be Italy!!! (no offense, haha)

As for your ending question…hurr….I have no idea. Maybe I’ll think of something later…

*is a pedo for HRE*

YOU CANT DENIGH HIM WITHOUT HIS HAT IS ADORABLE?!

As for my character… I had one for Hawaii 8D but I scrapped her =3= And Holland DOES have a design, it’s floating around somewhere. I DO believe that Luxemberg has one too, but there’s like.. no design.

At all.

Btw: HRE and Chibitalia’s endings are out~ Chibitalia’s gives you diabetes, and HRE speaks German in his

The Chibitalia sequence also made me puke and gag as well. It probably would have been less tedious if they just showed the whole segment in one episode instead of parts of several. Plus the part that appeared was completely unrelated to the actual episode story.

Also, in England’s visions, the bottom right is a pissed off Spain, and the top left is a messenger telling him bad news or something along those lines. Too bad they didn’t show Sweden aka Su-san in this episode though maybe its because they can’t find the right voice actor for his accent.

The funny thing about this whole episode for me is in American Cultures right now, we’re studying the conflicting European countries that settled in America.

I don’t really get why the Koreans are so pissed about the Hetalia movie especially since Korea won’t be appearing anyways. I know there are people everywhere that hate Hetalia with a passion and find it quite offensive but whole countries whose nation appears haven’t actually protested it. The only way Hetalia would be truly offensive is if Japan wasn’t satirized wither, which it is.

As for making my own character, I’d have to think about that.

4. 23 October 2009 at 8:04 am

Haaa… I saw that reaction coming from the moment the music started playing. XD I must say though… First class reaction right there. Made me laugh.

Great review as usual. I really enjoyed reading it. ^ ^

5. 23 October 2009 at 8:38 am

Ugh, Chibitalia segment had no place in the episode, but at least we could wash down the terrible taste with some refreshing colonization of the new world. I loved how Britain and France both immediately turned the plea into an excuse to acquire the territory anyway. Scotland pecking at England was great too. Since we had Henry VIII, we need a cameo appearance by Edward I. I can see it now, one day Scotland lands on his house and won’t leave so he does on a major hunting expedition chasing down all the other Scotland birds. Edward I, Longshanks, the Leopard, Hammer of the Scots ❤

Korea needs to calm the hell down about Hetalia, it's petty, inferiority-complex behavior that's unbefitting of an advanced and (regionally) influential country. Not even China, who generally loves to protest (for good and stupid reasons) anything Japanese hasn't raised a fuss.

Here's my idea in response to your question, though it's not for a country. I propose the UN be made a character. It can be male or female, and very much in the student council president character archetype except most of the time the major powers won't listen to them. But he/she can give them hall monitor-like armbands to allow them to beat up on another country or pull two fighting countries apart from each other with international approval. Blue and white armband with UN symbol, possibly a blue helmet, maybe anemic like Roma from SoraMani since he/she's only as strong as the power that member nations give him/her, particularly good friends with Sweden due to support, maybe some resemblance to America due to be headquartered there.

UN already has a character =3=

7. 23 October 2009 at 9:01 am

Chibitalia…*gagcoughgag*

Ahem. Got it out of my system.

I loved the “HE’S SO MY BROTHER!” Fight between England and France…because it brings to mind the battle of Quebec and all the idiotic things that those guys do to each other. *sighs in contented geekyness*

I have two countries that I put charas to.

Czech Rebublic- a sort of small, quiet girl with long dark hair
I like her because the Czech Republic was kinda a big part of World War Two…even tho no one says anything!

(Hitler: Of COURSE we won’t possess any more of the Czech Republic! Don’t worry about it!… *takes Czech Republic* WHUT?)

And East Germany…who’s Prussia’s twin sister. I have a fanfic about her that I’m writing. 😀 Ludwig hates her ^^ and she has problems with Russia, too…

8. 23 October 2009 at 9:47 am

@ luffyluffy

There’s already a UN character? Darn. Must be in the manga unless I just completely missed something.

~Luffy

There’s a UN char? An official one? I don’t remember that from the manga, but I haven’t read all of them…o.o

Anyways, I thought about your character challenge and I decided to do my state, Colorado (located in America), as I’m too lazy to think of a country…lol.

State-tan Name: Colorado
Human Name: Alex Garrows
Gender: Female

A bright girl, she is an active biker (haha, you know, the joke about the 2,000$ bike ontop of the 500$ car…?) and is very fit. Alex has glasses and long brown hair. She usually wears a dusty tie-dyed shirt+hoodie, long skirt, and is barefoot most of the time. She knows a lot about nature and science and has a pet dog. Alex has many influences in the way she dresses; she usually wears her hair in a Chinese bun but offten wears Indian bangles. Spanish is her second language. She drives a dusty car with lots of bumper stickers; most of which are quite opposite. (Like an Obama sticker and a McCain sticker, or the Jesus fish and the Darwin fish) Her favorite one is the COEXIST one though.

Alex likes to talk to Arizona and Wyoming. She can’t understand what’s so special about crowded places like New York or California. She is a mixture of religions as well as cultures. Alex will sometimes find pot in her house though she doesn’t take it herself. She always presumes that it is a prank.

Hurr that’s disorganized….sorry about htat, those were mostly spurr of the moment notes….lol.

I’m not fond with the Chibitalia moment…but laugh at England & France quarrel about who’s be a brother to little America 🙂
Lolz at Holland…he laugh is so evil!! To bad we only see his shadow only
Where is Sweden?

11. 23 October 2009 at 11:25 am

Scamp, I didn’t know you had an aversion against Chibitalia… I’m going to have to go back and read all of your early posts on Hetalia that I haven’t read yet to get the scoop on that. 😉 The only thing I wanted to say about the Chibitalia segment was that I think it’s actually young Germany (Ludwig) who wakes up in bed, with the digital alarm clock beeping – not HRE. Which means, hopefully, further reveal on the is-HRE-really-Germany issue is coming.

As to what my Hetalia-zed version of a country that hasn’t appeared yet would look like – I’m having a total failure of imagination at the moment. If I think of anything, I’ll post it later. 🙂

12. 23 October 2009 at 7:46 pm

@Humanity_Cat

Mixture of reasons for the relative lateness of the post (and some of the more recent posts as well). One is because I’m in university and I have less time to blog. Second, the uni blocks file-sharing sites so I have to DDL anime instead of Bittorent, which can be a bit unreliable. Thirdly, I used to try get my posts out as early as possible but seeing as I know have a regular group of readers I don’t need to rush my posts. Notice my posts have gotten longer, more time to think = more content.

I’m afraid I don’t know enough about American inter-state politics to comment on Colerado-tan.

@luffyluffy

When you toss in links into your comments it seems to be marked as spam. This has been happening a lot more recently.

@Siren

The Korea move complaints is almost certainly not true so I wouldn’t worry about it. I just thought I should mention it because I saw it mentioned in the comments and in a Hetalia forum somewhere.

Damnit, I wanted to go back and watch the episode knowing who those characters are but I’ve gone and deleted the bloody thing. Ah poo 😦

@Siri

If I didn’t react like that then I’m sure people might have been a bit confused and dissapointed. Glad to see you enjoy the posts

@ExecutiveOtaku

The only other historical figure that’s appeared thus far has been Joan of Arc. Well, I’m sure Hitler has appeared somewhere…has he? Hetalia often shirks around the dodgiest ares of history.

LOVE the UN character, even if he has been in it. You’ve gone and embarressed my Holland character…

@ksfwolfe

Heh heh, I like the idea of a Czech character. I get this image of Germany nervously putting his arm around her with England giving his blessing over them, much to the annoyance of Czech. And East Germany, god there is soooooo much you could do with that. East and West living next door to each other, trying to talk to each other over their garden wall, trying to show off their own gardens.

@Jan Suzukawa

Yeah, Chibitalia pretty much ruined the first half of Hetalia. Rather than trawling through all my Hetalia posts to find which ones I bitch about Chibitalia, I’ve done that work for you

Thanks for the links. So the cuteness factor of Chibitalia wore thin for you early on 😉 – I thought you might have had the same squick reaction that I did when they kissed in that one episode. I mean, they’re one foot tall with no noses – it was just sort of – ewww. I’m just hoping they resolve the is-HRE-really-Germany issue with a resounding YES at some point. 🙂

Well, i really find Chibitalia cute. But i kinda don’t like that first part in this episode. It’s not one of my fave strips of Chibitalia. Yes, i like some of Chibitalia comic strips. Because it made me laugh and go “awww”. I don’t hate Chibitalia at all, but i have to agree that some strips of it are pretty.. meh. :/ (Chibitalia’s Marukaite Chikyuu is cute. Definitely cute. i’m shaking bec of its cuteness)

I really like this episode because of:
1. Finland. Aww~ So cute. xD
2. Baby!America. Why so cute? ;o;
3. England. lol. Poor Igirisu-niichan.
Lastly,
4. France. So funny as usual. ❤ I lol'd so much when he and England started strangling each other. hahaha.. France's voice at that part was soo lol.

But this series lacks:
1. Sweden
2. More France. Hahaha xD (kidding)

About the Korea thing, maybe we shouldn't just say "Korea". If i remember correctly, a certain political (correct me if i'm wrong) group in Korea is behind all these protests. Well, maybe some Koreans, as well. But definitely not the whole country. I heard that there are Hetalia fans in there, too, and they wanted to celebrate Hetalia day but are afraid of those who are against it. So i guess they won't celebrate it too openly. So yeah.. Maybe we shouldn't just say "Korea"? Well, it's easier to say that way though. But still.. (i think you guys get my point x__x). Btw, i really love the Korea character in Hetalia. ❤ I find most of his parts in the comic funny.

@next episode: I will definitely love the next episode, because it will still be funny, will have France, and more funny arguments between France and England. It will have something that might boil your nerves though. ^^" But please do not mind it then.

PS: France and the France-England duo is awesome. ❤

(sorry for the long post ;__;)

… As usual, I loved your post. Chibitalia was good for being short though, and that’s all I’m going to say about it. How about the Siamese Empire as a nation? It would be a girl (because there need to be a few more on Hetalia), and possibly Thailand’s sister.

I don’t know whether this link will embed, but there’s something on youtube called the “iamatthewianproject”, designed to make Canada less invisible! Here are the links:

I find parts of it cute but the way that they planned it out in the first season really irked me….plus there’s just something that doesn’t make me….favore…it. I’ll think of it later when I’m not about to fall asleep from symphony practice, haha.

I think they need to animate the strip where Sweden runs away from…damn, I want to say Russia’s house, but I can’t remember….anyways, so Finland goes with him and when Su-san introduces Finland he introduces him as his wife XD Hurrhurr. Plus you get to see more Estonia…..<3

Or the one about (I know I'm going to spell this wrong) HanaTomago…that one's pretty adorable.

That's a good point, Blissfullynaive. But you have to admit that it's easy to say 'Koreans' than 'Korean Politicians', lol. Well…the idea. But Korea as a whole isn't to blame XD I can't believe no one in Poland has made a fuss considering that he's a crossdressing character XD (Oh I love him so! Such a fun character to watch someone rp!)

And Hetalia Day??!?? When is that? I might actually attempt to draw some human(-like) characters to celebrate! ^ ^

@blogger: Ah! The “iamatthewianproject”. I’ve seen posts about it in the LJ Hetalia comm. But i haven’t really watched it. Maybe i should now~ 😀

@Humanity Cat: I think Sweden and Finland was running away from Denmark. And they happen to stop by and visit Estonia. Well, irl (if i remember correctly), Estonia is quite close with the Nordics. xD

Ah, yep, Hana Tamago, their pet dog! Some say Finland might be a “Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant” because of the names he came up for said dog. xD Hana Tamago’s last name is Bloody, iirc. xD

Yep, Hetalia Day was on the 24th. Is 24th already done at your place? It’s the 25th here already. We had a blast yesterday. I miss Hetalia Day now. 😦

@Jan Suzukawa

Yeah, softcore shotacon yaoi isn’t really my thing

@Siren

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

@blissfullynaive

I know it’s pretty obviously the same group of stuck up idiots in Korea making a fuss about whatever Japan is producing. However referring to them as Koreans is just far easier and far less hassle then saying ‘that bunch of people who just so happen to be from Korea who aren’t a proper representation of the countries people as a whole’. Plus, I’m not really one for the whole ‘political correctness’ thing.

@blogger

F*cking WordPress, marking a comment as Spam yet again! lulz, is there actually a canadian thanksgiving?

Yeah, when I posted it was still the 24th….I probably couldn’t have done anything anyways…from the website, there was only one major Hetalia Day location in Colorado, and I’m sure it was either in Denver (only an hours drive) or on the other side of the Rockies (obviously more than an hours drive). Probably couldn’t have persuaded my parents anyways, haha.

Yeah, I think it was Denmark….I’ll just go check. Okies I just reread the strip (I love how everyone (minus Poland) thinks that Su-san is ‘soooo scary!’ when they first meet him XD And how he’s so….nonemotional~

Lolz, oh Finland XD I remember that strip too…I think he actually managed to freak out Su-san in that strip XP

The guy on the right is Spain. He and England had a complicated relationship, LOL Spanish Armada.

And I kinda like the idea of Holland going all "bwahahahaha!" as he kicked Sweden and Finland's collective behinds as a giant scary shadow. Tough stuff, those Dutch…

@Humanity Cat: I remember Su-san getting a bit freaked out with the names too. Hahaha.. They really should show Su-san ne?

@Anon: Oh yeah! The Spanish Armada! 😀 I remember that strip.

Have you watched the iammatthewian project yet, and if so did you enjoy it?
– scamp
*shrugs* I don’t know whether Canadian Thanksgiving actually exists… seeing as the producers of the film came from Canada I’m guessing there is.

There are fans of Hetalia in Korea – I was looking at the comments on a youtube video or something and somebody who was Korean *but was in Hong Kong at the time* had commented saying how much they loved it. And you can find those fandubs of the Marukaite Chikyuu lurking around somewhere in Korean… but it’s just easier to refer to them as “the Koreans” rather than having to specify the exact group as you said.

I don’t know anybody else who celebrates Hetalia day around my area… I’ve got two friends interested but they both live quite far away from me and my “Normal” friends as the like to call themselves think I’m weird for watching it. Oh well. Episode 40 in subs is out on youtube now. And Chibitalia is at the end of it for the last 25 seconds. And that is roughly a tenth of the episode. At least it’s small.

I’m proud to be Filipino so I’ll do my own country. Even tho we don’t really look like we’re important but Philippines is part of WWII. Philippines is a really important place for American victory over Japan because it’s really close to Japan and nothing is between US and Philippines but ocean(and few islands).The character could look like this(military uniform)

the hair should be like Japan’s.
It’s a small country so just shorter than America
He could be a lil bro to America cuz we were an American colony once
his name would be Philip
traits:
hot-blooded
religious
that’s all hahaha

28. 8 January 2010 at 9:59 pm

eh… Philippines are one of the important role during WW2.. well, not as important as US, UK and etc. We were sent in America to nurse American soldiers, and also, we almost won over Japan, until US came. They finished it off since Filipinos are worned out.

Aanyway, I would draw Philippines-tan as a girl :3 and that uniform, is great too 😀 I was going to put jacket afterwards 😀

I’m confused, are we puking and gagging at the Chibitalia scene because we don’t like the character, or is it because we’re a bunch of homophobic dumb asses?

Because if it’s the latter, then why the fuck are we even watching Hetalia in the first place.
