Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu episode 5

Ahhh, I swear this opening grows on you more and more so much that I’m starting to listen to it over and over again.   Ahhh… anyways, I’ve got nothing to rant about this time before I start this review.  Uh, let’s see… I’m responsible for the main construction of the spring 2010 anime season and I got a whole list of anime that are coming up, so look out for that when that’s coming out.  Anyways, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu is probably my most favorite anime that’s in this season so it’ll be interesting to see what the rest of you think.  Hmm, enough ranting – let’s begin.

What happened?

So begin the episode with Yoshii walking into the classroom to find out that the school is organizing a treasure hunt orientation.  And we get the opening (yes yes yes yes yes).  And we go to Yoshii who has found some gold (aka flour) and has his own feast.  Poor Yoshii, but as he goes to school he finds a key-chain of a amusement park mascot.  He decides to leave it but later finds Hazuki looking for a certain key-chain.  Huh, what are the odds..?  OH SHIIIIIIIIIT cars are running all over the place, and Yoshii gets permission to summon his being to save the key chain from the cars.  And if you’ve watched enough anime as I have, you know that he’ll fail… which he does.  He gets hit by the Principal’s car… what are the odds of that?  And the key chain gets destroyed – principal-san ends up shouting that summoned beings are not toys.  But Hazuki is still heart-broken.  Back to the treasure hunting prize – prizes: free meals for a year, video game coupons, and a key-chain toy of the mascot.  So the basic idea is that you have to get 3 questions right on a test and that’ll reveal the location of different treasures/prizes, but if you run into another team you have to have a summon battle.  YES, that finally means we’ll get battle scenes here – Yoshii wants to team up with Himejii but finds out that he’s in a team with the homeroom rep (Yuuji) and Hideyoshi (the male one).  Minami, Himejii, and Kouta are together.  And we’re off – team Yoshii uses pencil-guessing methods to get the first treasure.  Let’s see how this turns out… FAIL.  Team Himeji finds out that their prize is in the female changing room – lucky for Voyeur huh?  After a mad spree and search, Kouta passes out from the paradise he finds himself in (although nobody is changing).    Anyways, back to the dumbasses.  They find a basket of sweets that Himeji made – although don’t we remember that… OH SHIT.  OH SHIT, those things are poisonous.    They are four people, three cakes – only one will live.  And we shall decide with an epic sequence of… of… wait for it… ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS.   Hideyoshi wins and the others are… dying.  Meanwhile, we get a yuri-scene with Minami and her stalker.   Anyways, more hunting and failing before they find their first prize – the couple ticket to the amusement park.  Yoshii gets rejected by Hideyoshi (I mean, he is a guy but we still get a funny scene nonetheless) and life goes on.  Why not just give it to Yuuji and his sadistic girlfriend… but fail.  Fail, and we haven’t even seen a battle so far, but apparently the key-chain is still not-found, so Yoshii does random guessing.  I don’t know why they are so excited but here we go.  Haha the next scenes are pretty funny as they search everything with random encounters of random people.  After the whole day, there seems to be one more spot!  LOL, Team Class A comes to still the ticket (just as they find the last prize, but they don’t get to open).  Wow, the scores aren’t even funny… attack… but school ends!  Yoshii wins the key-chains and one of the secret prizes – iron bracelets that allow them to summon their begins without permission… but Yuuji’s and Hideyoshi’s blow up.  Only Yoshii’s survives and he gives the key-chains to Hazuki.  Happy end.

So what..?

Hahaha I love this show – funny, original, and never disappointing, except for the fact that we got no battle scenes.  I was disappointed that this episode focused on a certain group of characters, and the fact that he never found any other prizes.

At least the show's better than her cooking.

No battles but the comedy made up for that – plus, we got more… uh… fanservice… action… with Hideyoshi… uh… I don’t know anymore.   The punchlines were good and I’m still going to keep up with this series because it keeps up the fun that was presented in the first episode.  As for songs on this series, I don’t think that the full versions are out from either opening or ending, nor any character albums… should we expect some?  I think so, or at least I’m hoping for some.  Alright, keep watchin’!

    Food for thought
On the orientation game strategy by Yoshi

    ===================
    Information provided:
6:00 There are 3 questions with 6 choices each
    8:00 6000 question sheets (Probably a visual exaggeration/Duplicates)
    14:00 22 Prizes revealed
    20:00 Timed-out battle in sunset
    (Episode timings may not accurate)

    Assuming:
There are only 22 question sheets, each with 3 questions, 3 choices
The coordinates for each choice is different, no duplicate answers
That the questions are equally spread between each floor
    (only one on the rooftop)
8 hours of school time (7:30am-5:30pm) (Japan sunset time is around 5:15pm)
That Yoshi came up with the idea at 7:30 am, giving 8 hours to search)
That each coordinate is evenly spaced thus average time taken to search
(You would want students to know the school campus as part of orientation, no?)
That no time was spent at the loo, breakfast/lunch/snack, fighting through crowds (literally)
That they know the school campus well/have map reading skills
That the event of finding the basket of sweets did not knock them unconscious for hours

    (6^3)(22) = 4752 Possible Coordinates/Locations to look
4752/3 = 1584 Coordinates for Yoshi, Yuji, Hideyoshi each

    1584 Coordinates/8 hours
    198 Coordinates/hour
    198 Coordinates/3600 seconds
    1 Coordinate/15 seconds

    ===================
On average, 1 location every 15 seconds, 1584 locations to search.
It’s suicide. And this is being optimistic.
But of course, the group is stupid, so no harm trying..?

    ~_~

@Leah Yes, it is a suicidal endeavor. On the other hand, it’s also Yoshii’s off-the-wall logic forming a good strategy. If you can’t answer the questions effectively, then why waste time figuring it all out? Just searching every location at least gives you a chance of finding a prize, and while it’s small, any percentage above 0 is a massive improvement.
