Sora no Otoshimono episode 10

Okay, this episode beat last episode in terms of goodness but still, Sora no Otoshimono has a lot to pick up if it’s only 12/13 episodes.  Looking at it now, I bet the last two or three episodes will be about Ikaros turning bad and in the end, being stopped by her love.  She’ll have “human” characteristics and will stay and live on Earth.  Hopefully, the makers of this anime can prove me wrong, because this ending would be cliche and would SUCK.  I don’t care how cute Ikaros is – this anime is going to make me pissed if it was 11 episodes of fan-service and 1~2 episodes of decent plot with a cliche ending.  But we still got to see the mutual feelings of love develop between Tomoki x Ikaros.

So the episode starts with Tomoki, Ikaros, and Nymph watching a drama – Ikaros thinks “I want to hold Master’s hand”.  Brilliant – so just what have you been doing all this time?  You kissed him, watched him run naked, gave a hundred different girls’ underwear, yet you never held his hand?

And it’s time for the cultural fair – what anime would be complete without an episode of girls at a cultural fair?  Tomoki gets chosen as a human canonball for the event by the Discovery when they’re next-door neighbor private academy comes over to completely diss the “un-cultured” and “poor” regular school.  Their attitudes remind me of the rich kids in class who can lose their iPod and say “Don’t worry – I’ll get another one from my parents because they can actually buy one.”

So anyway, the Private Academy kids are doing a classical music performance, so our heroes decide to fight back with a band.   President Mikako uses her yakuza family to sponsor her, while the PA – Private Academy- kid get their super rich PTA to sponsor them in an all-out war for popularity.  This eventually grows bigger until Sorami City is divided into two just to support each band.  That’s when Tomoki realizes that they really need to start practicing to make their band actually sound good.

So Ikaros is sad that she can’t play the… tambourine, but Sohara suggests that she play something else.  BUT JUST WHAT IS IT?  We skip scenes to the day of the Cultural festival – where the first thing Tomoki does is go to a maid cafe, where Ikares, Sohara, and Nymph are dressed in… swimming suits… and aprons.   Nice.

The Academy ends up playing the first movement of the Dvorak New World Symphony (they don’t tell you, I just know).  As a music major, I was disappointed that they used the most well-known performance of it.  The orchestra didn’t sync with the music.  But that’s not what we’re here for.

So Tomoki’s first song is… “Tingling Nipples” with a cute costume and weird lyrics about… nipples.

But Sohara stops him from singing and they begin to play the “real” song now, with Ikaros… SINGING.  And guess what?  She touches Tomoki’s  hand, and gets complete inspiration.

To me, those looks say “We are going to KICK… YOUR… ASS…es.”

FALLEN DOWN, with the kickass spreading-wings-suddenly-at-the-beginning-of-the-song effects.  What do you expect?  Ikaros sings a touching love song of… the sky and flying (that seems to be a popular theme).  During the song, she has flashbacks with all the times she had fun and with her friends – the song basically is her feelings for Tomoki.  It’s touching, and we see the whole school and PA admiring Ikaros and shouting her name.   “Please… don’t leave me behind.  If It’s for you, I’ll fly once more.  The blue sky is so pure that I want to cry.  I’ll fly with these tainted wings, and I’ll fall to you.  Fallen down…. fallen down.”

BUT WAIT. Hasn’t there already been another anime where the main heroine unexpectedly is the singer for a band that performs in front of the school at a cultural festival?  And doesn’t that band eventually get its signature from that… or the TWO songs that they play?  I don’t know, but God Know that Ikaros didn’t Lost My Music.  (I’m sorry, that was a lame attempt at bringing in… never mind, this scene is pretty original.)

So they end up celebrating kicking PA’s ass, and Ikaros realizes that the song was a combined effort.

But NO culture festival is complete without a bonfire.  Nymph, Ikaros, and Sohara want to go, but Nymph and Sohara let Ikaros go with Tomoki to the couple bonfire.  Nice – Ikaros is completely touched… BUT THE EPISODE ENDS LIKE THAT.  Expect something to happen during the bonfire that is worth another complete episode.  We get the entire ending sequence… BUT we go to the scene of the bonfire where Ikaros and Tomoki are sitting down.  Ikaros has the final thought “I’m the weapon Master hates”.  Uh-oh.
